A handful of wetlands have held onto water, and even better, they’re holding #SpottedTurtles! We kicked off the season on a high note, documenting turtles at two sites with no previous records!
Over the last several months, we kept a small number of hatchling #SpottedTurtles in a lab to study how nest temperature affects survival, growth, and fitness. Partners at @ZooNewEngland replicated this work with turtles from Massachusetts, allowing comparisons across a broad latitudinal gradient.
#Spottedturtles are an at risk species in my area, so the location of this hatchling is nunya business. :) Look at da baby! #turtle species are not dependent on their mothers.
The only help they need from us is to protect their habitats and move them off the roads :)

...tackle the biggest challenges facing turtle and tortoise #conservation today. Our team contributed to the conversation by presenting two talks highlighting our long-term research on #SpottedTurtles in the southeastern U.S.
This adaptation is one way that #SpottedTurtles in the southeast can capitalize on long active seasons with often abundant resources to devote towards reproduction.
When out sampling for #SpottedTurtles, we don’t solely run into our target species.
