From Noah Smith (@Noahpinion@twitter.com):

"""
Because this platform [Twitter] no longer shows news headlines, today I found myself searching Google News instead of searching Twitter for news about breaking events, for the first time in many years.

Every other change to the platform so far has been cosmetic, but the removal of headlines [from OpenGraph cards] disabled a core functionality. Twitter was always a news feed; now it's just a series of images and seemingly random comments.

This opens the door for real Twitter-disrupter to emerge -- not a Twitter clone, but some thing that gets people posting breaking news that's more targeted and relevant than Google News.

Whoever figures out how to do that will make a lot of money.

The WAFRN idea of custom themes is very cool, too.

Decades ago, being able to 'theme' and 'skin' things was common.

I like that WAFRN has this feature.

I would assume that, from an ActivityPub & JSON-LD point-of-view, that these WARFN "bites" / "pokes" are probably some type of custom Activity type.

It might be fun to make able to use your own custom verbs, too.

For example:

"Joe Blow has throw a water balloon at you."

I think it wouldalso be nice if other Fediverse software supported the displaying of these types of activities (even if they don't support creating them.)

I like the idea of having "fun" things that are part of (at least some of) the Fediverse.

The WARFN idea of "bites" / "pokes" seems like one of them.

I would assume notifications for it might look something like:

"Joe Blow has bit you."

"One of the great things about Twitter, which has been in decline for years, was having so many unique experts and accomplished people all across different fields who, even if they had incredibly dumb shit political opinions, would still at least sometimes share unique insights about the crafts they happened to be total fucking geniuses in. It's been genuinely sad seeing that aspect of Twitter continue to wither away."

I've been slowly uploading my back catalog to my channel on Floatplane, though not all my content is there yet.

Some in the fediverse ask why I'm not on Peertube. Here's the problem (and it's not insurmountable): right now, there's no easy path towards sustainable content production when the audience for the content is 100x smaller, and the number of patrons/sponsors remains proportionally the same.

I was never able to sustain my open source work based on patronage, and content production is the same—just more expensive to maintain to any standard (each video takes between 10-300 hours to produce, and I have a family to feed, and US health insurance companies to fund).

YouTube was, and still is, a creative anomaly. I'm hugely thankful to my Patreon, GitHub, and Floatplane supporters—and I hope to have direct funding fully able to support my work someday. But until that time, YouTube's AdSense revenue and vast reach is a kind of 'golden handcuff.'

The handcuff has been a bit tarnished of late, however, with Google recently adding AI summaries to videos—which seems to indicate maybe Gemini is slurping up my content and using it in their AI models?

Maybe the handcuffs are fools-gold, and I just don't see it yet.

An interesting quote from @geerlingguy .

The TL;DR is that — for him to use PeerTube or any other Fediverse alternative to YouTube — he would need to be able to make a living from it.

He is not the only one who has expressed this sentiment.

This is what is currently trending on mastodon.social

Given current events, what isn't on this list probably says something about who is and isn't in Fediverse yet.

And perhaps where we (who would like to grow and spread the Fediverse) could improve things.

There’s been many names for what it is; or at least, I’ve seen it being referred to in different ways in different conversations at different times. The one I like the most is “peopleverse”, but this is popularly used only in niche groups now, it seems. In this post, I want to go write down why I care about this thing we now call “the Fediverse”. ## Background Before anything else, let’s step back a bit to understand where we are now… Some years ago, there was a wave of popularity around “Internet of Things (IoT)”. It coudn’t be escaped back then – much similar to “blockchain” and the much more recent hype we have now with Gen AI. Though these hypes come and go, the principles they leave have lasting effect… and the Fediverse, though not formally, can be traced back to IoT. Technically, the Fediverse consists of protocols and platforms that facilitate how humans are represented and interact online in a decentralized manner (i.e., in contrast to the usual centralized architecture, but more on that later). In simple terms, the Fediverse is the “Internet of People”. ## Internet of People and the People behind For the longest time, the way we would socialize online is via centralized platforms: Friendster, Plurk, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, and others… these are all centrally owned. We have seen where this goes mostly: the platforms become a reflection of their owners’ values, and most (if not all) of the time it does not work well for communities in there. The Fediverse is a response to that: we want to move the ownership of our data and interaction into the people’s hands. The World Wide Web Consortium has a set of recommendations for this, which is now being taken care of by a working group and the Social Web Foundation. Brilliant people are putting their minds together so we can prevent more catastrophy that comes out from centralized social platforms. We are seeing a movement that is very real. The recent FOSDEM conference even had a dedicated session for the SocialWeb. Not only that; privately owned platforms are also looking to join. Though, trying not to be cynical, it does remind me of Microsoft buying into the Open Source movement, which no one could have imagined many many years ago. Now they own GitHub, we have Windows Subsystem for Linux, and it feels great… but we also have Copilot that trained itself from all our open source code without permission for profit. It’s a long game, with many nuances. But the point is: the Fediverse is a big enough movement to get big tech’s attention. Threads by Meta has joined. And even though Bluesky (which started as a research in Twitter) has their own proprietary protocol (AT Protocol), the devs are very supportive of Bridgy Fed – a system for bridging interactions between the Fediverse’s protocol and theirs. ## How it looks in the end You will find a lot of parallels with how the Fediverse works and email works: Someone using gmail can exchange messages with someone using protonmail, for example, and someone using Mastodon should be able to interact with someone using Threads or Bluesky. It is not perfectly there yet, but that’s the intention of this movement. Many institutions have put up their own communities now on the Fediverse, such as Amsterdam, The European Union, and various Academic institutions. This is because you should own your data and not be dependent on any private party when communicating with your community. ## Why I care so much about the Fediverse I see huge potential in the Fediverse. We’ve gone from Internet of Things to the Internet of People… And we are seeing technology used to protect and help communities thrive. If this is not what tech is for, then I don’t know what else is. :)

I have seen some (non-aggressive) alt-text advocates write the alt-text themselves, and offer it to the users (who didn't add alt-text).

That is much, much better than yelling at someone (for not including alt-text)!

No nagging. No aggressiveness. No hostility.
