Happy New Year one and all! Mouse back after a bit of a holiday and a house move and starting 2025 with the best five #ChurchesToVisitSalisburyToTheSea. In at number 5: #StMaryEllingham #Hampshire. Curious and quirky, but step right back into C17 when you walk through that door
#TheBestOfSalisburyToTheSea doors: #StMaryEllingham #Hampshire #AdoorableThursday
Much reconstructed chamfered pointed doorway of ironstone, greensand and limestone. Double planked C15 door with moulded fillets

#TheBestOfSalisburyToTheSea piscina: #StMaryEllingham #Hampshire. Mouse is fascinated by piscina and their fate over the turbulent periods of church and state history. This C13 trefoil twin basin piscina is a beautiful example #MasonryMonday
#TheBestOfSalisburyToTheSea chancel: #StMaryEllingham #Hampshire
Almost entirely C19 reconstruction of the chancel but nonetheless beautiful
Which church porch left Mouse torn between popping in for a poke and staring lovingly?
#TheBestOfSalisburyToTheSea church porch goes to #StMaryEllingham

It's Friday so it's font time. In this case a C15 octagonal font of moulded octagonal column. Well proportioned and cleanly cut this is a font with a purpose #StMaryEllingham #Hampshire #FontsOnFriday
South of chancel #StMaryEllingham #Hampshire
Chamfered pointed priests door with drawbridge, gate and matching rails. Mouse say "Lovely"
South door, interior #StMaryEllingham #Hampshire
This shows that the door is double planked and so held together by nails front and back. The wide crudely cut (in places) planks confirm its age. Sadly someone thought a brass handle would compliment a 600 year old door. Nice work
South door inside porch #StMaryEllingham #Hampshire
Wonderful #ChurchDoorFittings probably C15. Although the fillets and stiles have been replaced the planking is more likely than not of a similar vintage
Fabulous chamfered pointed doorway with planked and filleted door of some considerable age. Ironstone, limestone and possibly a little greensand for good measure #StMaryEllingham #Hampshire
Saving the best until last #StMaryEllingham #Hampshire

South of nave adjacent to 'rood turret' #StMaryEllingham #Hampshire
Square (headed) 3-light window with 4-centred lights and indented (or hollow) spandrels. In the style of late C15 but close inspection suggests either heavily repaired or C19

South of chancel #StMaryEllingham #Hampshire
Perpendicular-style 3-light windows with cusped lights, label and headstops each side of the priests door. One a C19 copy of a C15 original. Which is which? For 5 further marks, what are the clues?

North elevation of vestry-cum-organ loft #StMaryEllingham #Hampshire
Decorated-style 3-light window. Cusped pointed lights, hexagonal cusped piercings above. Quality and cut of the masonry and stone voussoir above the head give it away as C19. For more windows follow: #EllinghamChurchWindows (4/11)
East elevation of chancel #StMaryEllingham #Hampshire
3-light window with stepped pointed lights. Either post-dating the chancel of re-set as there is some very peculiar packing around the head
For more windows follow: #EllinghamChurchWindows (3/11)
The 2-light window (left), south of the nave is a fairly faithful copy of the C13 original, south of the chancel #StMaryEllingham #Hampshire. The head is monolithic and examples like these help identify C19 replacements in other churches. For more windows follow: #EllinghamChurchWindows (2/11)
The church of #StMaryEllingham #Hampshire is one of those places where you almost have a little potted history of window design. Starting here with a C13 2-light window with pointed lights. For more windows follow: #EllinghamChurchWindows (1/11)
Curious protuberance and central heating explained. A family pew cut into the wall. You have to be someone to make this kind of alteration to a church. Beautifully made with delicate openwork and a grandstand view of the pulpit #StMaryEllingham #Hampshire. Follow for more: #EllinghamChurchPlan (5/5)

Chamfered C15 pseudo-4-centred #ChurchDoorway with more recent door serving the 'rood turret' Mouse didn't get to go inside but this is probably no more than a cupboard now. Follow for more: #EllinghamChurchPlan (4/5)
Curious protuberance sandwiched between vestry-cum-organ loft stack and buttress, with catslide roof and what looks like it's own tiny central heating system #StMaryEllingham #Hampshire. Follow for more: #EllinghamChurchPlan (3/5)
'Rood turret' #StMaryEllingham #Hampshire. A 3-centred or 4-centred arch is hard enough to build at the best of times but it will go wrong after a few pints of mead and that seems to be what happened with the monolithic lintel on this door. One word:wonky. Follow for more: #EllinghamChurchPlan (2/5)
The church of #StMaryEllingham #Hampshire may have a simple nave, chancel, porch plan but it has some sticky out bits added later. This purports to be a rood turret but seems somewhat small. Perhaps curtailed. Follow for more: #EllinghamChurchPlan (1/5)
Rather fine memorial tablet with the added bonus that if you zoom in below there is a picture of the pre-Reformation painting from the tympanum above the chancel screen #StMaryEllingham #Hampshire
