Here’s what’s going on: We’re officially switching to a coconut apricot wax blend for all online orders. Our in-store candles will still be poured with soy until our current inventory sells out, but once it’s gone, it's all coconut apricot from there. We’ve used 100 percent soy wax for years because we believed it was the safest and most sustainable option, and at the time, it was. But things change. We’ve learned more. Soy has become a major player in industrial farming, which means it’s now contributing to deforestation and soil depletion in ways we can’t ignore. On top of that, the soy market is falling apart. US farmers are losing contracts due to tariffs, international buyers are cancelling contracts, and due to deportations, the soybeans are being left in the fields to rot. There will be a soy shortage in the coming months. Combine that with raw material (paper, glass) prices skyrocketing, again, due to tariffs. Don’t even get me started on Washington State’s crushing manufacturing taxes. So I did what I always do. I adapted.
Coconut apricot wax is a smarter, more sustainable upgrade. It burns beautifully, cleans up easily, holds scent like a dream, and works perfectly with our all-cotton wicks. It’s a better fit for where we’re headed, and I think you’ll love it. It is also grown and made in the USA. Now, let’s talk about fragrance. This part still makes my blood boil. I recently discovered that our fragrance oil supplier planned to start adding phthalates to their blends. I shut it down immediately. Side Note: phthalates are used in fragrance oils to help the scent last longer and blend ingredients. They are also endocrine disruptors linked to reproductive and developmental issues. Let me be absolutely clear: none of our products have ever contained phthalates. Not one. The second I found out about their plan, I ended the relationship. Malicious Women Co. will never compromise on safety. We are committed to using non-toxic fragrances and essential oil blends that are safe for you, your pets, and your home. Humans before candles. Always. The good news? We now have a brand-new scent library that is 100 percent certified non-toxic. Clean ingredients. No hidden junk. And because I know scent memory is real and some of you would riot if we got rid of your favorite, I kept four classics from a trusted supplier: Cabernet All Day, Frooty Loops, Oakmoss and Amber, and Rebel Rose. Everything else is being reimagined, retested, and reborn into the next generation of Malicious scents.
The labels got a makeover too. We’ve redesigned them to be easier to read and way more functional. Smaller format, bigger fonts, a QR code to our socials, and a barcode for in-store scanning. Our wholesale customers will now be able to scan the candles right in Square. New Sustainable packaging. One more update: our candles will no longer be individually boxed. Here’s why. First, the custom boxes I buy come from a local manufacturer, but the raw materials are imported from China. Thanks to new tariffs, there’s now a staggering 55% tax on them. That means each little box would NOW cost $1.55 for something you’re just going to toss in the bin. Instead, your candles will ship snugly in a sturdy box with recycled paper padding. Less waste, less cost, and will help absorb some of the rising costs of raw materials. One more thing. I’ve taken on a trusted manufacturing partner. Not because I wanted to outsource. It’s because I need help surviving this economy. The cost of materials, the shipping delays for materials, the nonstop scrambling just to stay in stock. It’s unsustainable when you’re a small business trying to compete with BIG CANDLE. I can personally guarantee the quality of candles. Saida (MWCC Production Manager) and I visited the production facility, and it is incredible. They are as focused on quality as I am. We’re still pouring in our Snohomish studio for our retail store and small batch drops, but now we’ve got help getting online orders out the door faster and more efficiently. This lets us grow without compromising the quality or the standards we’ve built this company on. To the people rooting for me to fail: Hi. I see you. I am still here. Still pouring. Still standing. Still building something you swore would never last.
So yes, a lot is changing. But here’s what isn’t. We are still using all-cotton wicks with a paper core. We are still committed to clean, non-toxic ingredients in every single product. We are still donating to causes that matter. We are still writing labels that say what you’re really thinking.
