Chancel from east to crossing #StMaryRedcliffe Bristol for #StonemasonryMonday
The church is illuminated by a clerestory of vast Perpendicular pointed windows. The ribs of the vault seemingly erupting from the thinnest shafts between the windows
Nave from west to crossing #StMaryRedcliffe Bristol for #StonemasonryMonday
A vault like this has an eternal beauty from every angle you view it. It makes you want to photograph it from everywhere in the church. Which Mouse did
Nave roof, west crossing arch and tower roof #HolyTrinityBristol
The nave vaulting, in fact the totality of the nave looks authentic, but in reality was built mid to late C19. The original C16 nave was left unfinished by the time of the English Reformation #StonemasonryMonday
Time for a #NerdyMouseAlert. Look away now if you don't want minute technical detail: wonderful C15 piers to the arcades. Four thin engaged shafts separated by cavetto (hollow) moulded strips. You can feel the centuries.. #HolyTrinityAbbotsLeigh #NorthSomerset #StonemasonryMonday
Signature Somerset. Signature Mouse...
Classic Somerset arch (south aisle) the cavetto moulding separating the engaged shafts of the pier extends through the arch itself with chamfered intrados and roll moulded extrados #HolyTrinityAbbotsLeigh #NorthSomerset #StonemasonryMonday
Chancel arch to tower Tower arch to chancel #HolyTrinityAbbotsLeigh #NorthSomerset for #StonemasonryMonday
The tall C13 double chamfered pointed tower arch framing the west window pre-dates pretty much everything in the church and is a beautiful example of its type
Tower arch to chancel #HolyTrinityAbbotsLeigh #NorthSomerset for #StonemasonryMonday
Three bay north and south aisles of pointed moulded arches on piers of four engaged shafts each separated by cavetto (hollow) moulding
Tall narrow nave and 3-bay north and south aisles #StGeorgeEastonInGordano #NorthSomerset for #StonemasonryMonday
Each bay of the aisles is a double pointed arch, with a chamfered outer order and cavetto (hollow) inner on octagonal piers and responds with thin moulded capitals
Time for a #NerdyMouseAlert (new #), look away now if you don't want minute technical details. Spur at the base of each of the aisle pier corners. Small half moulding above (what is normally) a curved surface. Often seen as a detail on C13 masonry #StMaryPortbury #NorthSomerset #StonemasonryMonday
Probably once a stoup and possibly reset. South inner wall of south aisle #StMaryPortbury #NorthSomerset #StonemasonryMonday. Lovely #Ogee with cavetto moulding decorated with primitive fleurons, typical of C15. Rather lovely and Mouse not seen this particular design elsewhere
Restored C13 #Piscina, attached to a #Sedilia. The bowl and credence shelf having been smashed, probably in this case during the English Reformation. Beautifully carved chamfered trefoil with nook shafts and moulded capitals #StMaryPortbury #NorthSomerset #StonemasonryMonday
Tall tower arch #StMaryPortbury #NorthSomerset. Step and cavetto (hollow) moulded. Blue Lias rubble relieving arch protects the masonry structure. All of this would have been plastered when built, doubtless scraped during C19 renovations #StonemasonryMonday
The 5-bay north and south arcades of the church of #StMaryPortbury #NorthSomerset are beautiful continuous double chamfered pointed arches. They're Early English in style placing them as early C13. They lean outwards slightly. Mouse need to find out why #StonemasonryMonday
Richly moulded chancel arch (prob. C14) on responds claimed to be C12 clustered shafts. Mouse hate to say it but that roll and keel moulding is at least 100 years before its time if that's true. The capitals are at least Romanesque-style #StonemasonryMonday from #StMaryPortbury
Fabulous tall wave moulded arch to C16 tower. The Listing say 4-centred but it's actually not, it just has its centres quite far along the inside of the springing line. A good sprinkling of angels and saints complete the scene #StAndrewOldCleeve #Somerset for #StonemasonryMonday
From chancel arch #StAndrewOldCleeve #Somerset for #StonemasonryMonday
Perpendicular arches, on four shafts separated by (in this case) ovolo moulding. Wider and lower than other churches on this scamper. Listing says 'disappointing capitals'. Mouse wonder what was expected
South of chancel #StDecumanWatchet #Somerset for #StonemasonryMonday
Curious niche with inexcusable, seemingly cast concrete canopy that is, well, inexcusable. The jambs are an assemblage of #Spolia, including what looks like a section of nook shaft #ThingsThatMakeMouseGoHmm

#StDecumanWatchet #Somerset for #StonemasonryMonday
A slight sense of things out of place and some bonus scaffolding poles due to the on-going electrical work
From chancel #StDecumanWatchet #Somerset for #StonemasonryMonday
Ironically, bearing in mind Mouse's myriad comments about church wiring, electrical work is currently being done, so this is the tidiest way to see the 3-bays of the nave and single arches of the side chapels
From chancel #StMaryQuantoxhead #Somerset for #StonemasonryMonday
Only the second rubblestone pointed arch Mouse seen after #AllSaintsOtterhampton. It contrasts with the fine double chamfered pointed tower arch. Listing says C19. It's interesting to think what it replaced
If this is a #ChurchPiscina then it has very finely carved cusps that suggest it's C15. The basin has either been replaced or filled to stop any sneaky post-Reformation Papistry. The cusping is so fine it could easily be a recycled light #StMaryKilve #Somerset for #StonemasonryMonday
More bank vault than vestry...
Entirely modern and somewhat incongruous gate letting into modern vestry, set in a solidly made chamfered arch that significantly predates the age of the church. Chamfered pointed segmental inner arch #StMaryKilve #Somerset for #StonemasonryMonday

#StMaryCannington #Somerset #StonemasonryMonday
(once a piscina, now a niche for all that is sacred)
For Mouse this represent the peak of Perpendicular stone masonry. Elegant and slender arches and piers representing the work of masons at the height of their game. Lovely to Mouse and she say that as a Romanesque and Decorated lover #StMaryCannington #Somerset #StonemasonryMonday
Signature Somerset... signature Mouse...
#StMaryCannington #Somerset for #StonemasonryMonday
The #CanningtonChurchInterior tour. Part VI of VI: from centre of tower arch. Were the C14 nave and chancel accidentally built slightly off east-west? Is that why the C15 nave is at an angle to the C14 tower? Oh for a compass! #StMaryCannington #Somerset #StonemasonryMonday
The #CanningtonChurchInterior tour. Part V of VI: from west tower. The way in which the nave angles away to the south with respect to the tower is perhaps most evident from this perspective. You can also see extensive arch repairs #StMaryCannington #Somerset #StonemasonryMonday
The #CanningtonChurchInterior tour. Part IV of VI: The fabulous C14 wave moulded pointed tower arch frames a perfectly illuminated west window. The creasing of the original nave roof is clearly visible #StMaryCannington #Somerset #StonemasonryMonday
South of chancel #StMartinFiddington #Somerset for #StonemasonryMonday
Listed as a C15 piscina. It's not. It's at knee height for a start and a chamfered pointed continuous arch. No basin, no drain... no pop, no style
#ChurchPiscina
Somewhat specialised even for Mouse, but this is what a pucker C14 double chamfered respond looks like. Mouse think it interesting at least
Sadly the recipient of a rather shonky re-mortaring, presumably using mum's best spoon #StMartinFiddington #Somerset #StonemasonryMonday
