Six beautiful churches but how do you choose the best of the #ScamperDownTheSomersetCoast #HuntspillToKilve leg? Hard to decide but it's the battle of the towers all over again. Quaint Decorated quintessentially English #StMartinFiddington vs vast Perpendicular #StMaryCannington
A few last moments from the #ScamperDownTheSomersetCoast #HuntspillToKilve leg: The place to find a wonderful rood #StMaryCannington. The rood group is said to be C15 with C19 restoration. If true this is a great survivor of turbulent times (and a beautiful photo)
A few last moments from the #ScamperDownTheSomersetCoast #HuntspillToKilve leg: The ultimate organ! #StMaryCannington
It's so late but it's never too late to declare a fantastic font winner from the #ScamperDownTheSomersetCoast #HuntspillToKilve leg: #StMaryCannington. Not only a beautifully carved C15 font but unusually for churches these days it's in a lovely uncluttered setting #FontsOnFriday
Most marvelous #MouseEyeView: Tower edition from the #ScamperDownTheSomersetCoast #HuntspillToKilve leg: #StMaryCannington #TowerTuesday
Top for tracery on the #ScamperDownTheSomersetCoast #HuntspillToKilve leg: #StMaryCannington. This church is dominated by huge Perpendicular panel windows and exquisitely fine tracery... a little #PerpyPerfection for #TraceryTuesday
Your must see for top tier tileage on the #ScamperDownTheSomersetCoast #HuntspillToKilve leg: #StMaryCannington. Much care, attention and more likely than not money was lavished on the C19 restoration of this church. Tiles at every turn. Lovely #TilesOnTuesday
Another view. Which is the toppermost tower? Who is the winner of top tower from the #ScamperDownTheSomersetCoast #HuntspillToKilve leg? The tall powerful Perpendicular #StMaryCannington or the charming #StMartinFiddington? #TowerTuesday
When it comes to toppermost tower from the #ScamperDownTheSomersetCoast #HuntspillToKilve leg, these two will go head to head right to the last. So different and yet seemingly equally striking and beautiful #StMaryCannington #StMartinFiddington
Stained glass summit from the #ScamperDownTheSomersetCoast #HuntspillToKilve leg: #StMaryCannington. Good stained glass is thin on the ground often it's Victorian and undistinguished. There's plenty of unremarkable glass here but when it's framed like this...#StainedGlassSunday
As #FontsMeanFarewell it's time to move on to review the next leg of the #ScamperDownTheSomersetCoast. Leg three: #HuntspillToKilve Part A: #StPeterHuntspill #AllSaintsOtterhampton #StMaryCannington
Roods and the loft were removed during the English Reformation as they were seen as Popery. Below is a modern replacement rood and loft seen at #StMaryCannington. The medieval original was higher than the modern replacement as can be seen from the height of the original door above the loft ๐ญ
And as #FontsMeanFarewell, what of the church of #StMaryCannington #Somerset? Most notable for its tower, this church is truly impressive in scale and somewhat of an enigma too. Plenty of details to captivate the interest. Mouse awarding another 4/5 #MusVisit๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ
Not just a niche. A full on aedicule. Ornately carved at that. This is actually set into a quoin between the two set back buttresses on the south west corner of #StMaryCannington #Somerset. Mouse think that is quite unusual. Name the figure for bonus points #FridaysFiguresInStone
These niches don't just have tenants, they're looking down to see what's going on. Mouse wonders if the medieval originals on this and other churches always did that. Anyone know or have examples? #FridaysFiguresInStone from #StMaryCannington #Somerset
Left and right of west door #StMaryCannington #Somerset
Classic niche design. Croqueted #Ogee canopy with finials, pinnacles extend from piers and responds. Garden centre quality statues but nice to see the niches used. Not just #FridaysFacesInStone but #FridaysFiguresInStone
(Right) "Another five hundred years in this terrible weather..."
(Left) "I really can't face it"
What head stops really talk about when we're not listening (whinging mainly). West door #StMaryCannington #Somerset #FridaysFacesInStone
Fine font cover seemingly displaced in favour of a herb garden. Mouse can't find this mentioned anywhere (bet someone instantly find a reference now Mouse said that) but it looks C19 masquerading as Jacobian.
#StMaryCannington #Somerset for #FontsOnFriday
Decoration, top to bottom on each face: Pointed quatrefoil arranged as petals with fleuron relief on roundel to centre, Tudor rose, cusped pointed panel with flat tail
#StMaryCannington #Somerset for #FontsOnFriday
From west door #StMaryCannington #Somerset for #FontsOnFriday
Font dating from late C14 to early C15. Octagonal basin, stem and base standing on a much earlier pedestal. Basin has vertical sides. A concave tapering section terminating with a roll moulding connects bowl to stem
The font of #StMaryCannington #Somerset looks really quite striking in this setting (well once Mouse had tidied up a bit... you know how it is) particularly on these lovely tiles. Mouse somehow feels that under the tower is where a font really should be #FontsOnFriday
South door #StMaryCannington #Somerset for #FerrousFriday
Even without looking at the fittings it's obvious that these are modern and somehow the mass produced quality leaves them apart from some of the beautiful and ancient blacksmith made #ChurchDoorFittings
And now for a game of.... name that monarch! All the way from the Somerset coast, right here in lovely Cannington. Goooood luck everyone!
A spot of #LesArmoiriesDuVendredi from #StMaryCannington #Somerset. Above south door
North aisle. Easternmost bay of arcade #StMaryCannington #Somerset
Separately the wrought iron screen (once guarding a tomb) and the ornate organ would look beautiful but together they form the mishiest mash of an image
#FridayPipes #FerrousFriday
Mouse's #FridaysBitsAndPieces from #StMaryCannington #Somerset. All of the bits and pieces Mouse forgot to share over the week: Stripped of lime plaster the vast walls of the church look striking in appearance partly due to the later beaded mortar between coursed rubble stones
Mouse's #FridaysBitsAndPieces from #StMaryCannington #Somerset. All of the bits and pieces Mouse forgot to share over the week: More Victorian Turkish bath than chancel sedilia, perhaps. Sans canopies and similar in design to #StPeterHuntspill
Mouse's #FridaysBitsAndPieces from #StMaryCannington #Somerset. All of the bits and pieces Mouse forgot to share over the week: Ornately carved and painted C19 reredos with fabby vaulted ceilings in each cusped bay
(Rufus loves saying the word reredos. Try it out loud like a dog)
Mouse's #FridaysBitsAndPieces from #StMaryCannington #Somerset. All of the bits and pieces Mouse forgot to share over the week: This mahoosive red lantern seems somewhat incongruous amid late medieval wagon roof and painted bosses of the south porch
Mouse's #FridaysBitsAndPieces from #StMaryCannington #Somerset. All of the bits and pieces Mouse forgot to share over the week: In a church yard almost devoid of memorials this #ChestTomb feels somewhat lonely
And finally from Mouse the severely crumbling west doorway and C19 planked door. The doorway was once moulded and carved but little now remains #StMaryCannington #Somerset for #AdoorableThursday
