i’ve discovered a juvenile attraction towards monasteries. now how to wed it to dislikes about the church—i think the author had the same issues.

A favorite line (of many) from Charlotte Wood's novel *Stone Yard Devotional*: "The subtlety of the lilting chant belies the blunt instrument of the words themselves."

Another five-star review. #StoneYardDevotional is an intriguing exploration of grief, spirituality, and forgiveness during a time of isolation and covid lockdowns in Australia. What does is take to be a good person in times of environmental and personal crisis?

Photo of hard copy of Stone Yard Devotional, sitting on a cream rug. I’m not actually sure what the cover depicts - it looks like the inside of an old building with faded, patchy green walls and a very scruffy cream painted door, where the paint has chipped off the door and frame. There look to be mounds of sand inside the building, as if they have pressed against the door and are taking over the building. I wonder if it depicts lime (which is used in the book to throw over the dead mice bodies)? The name of the book is an almost neon green around the top left corner of the book. The author’s name in white is around the bottom right. The book says “The Booker Prize 2024 Shortlisted’ in the bottom left. There are two reviews - along the left side it says “I have rarely been so absorbed by a novel” Guardian and on the right it says “A beautiful work that does not flinch from life” Sunday Times.

Book 10/?- Stone Yard Devotional by Charlotte Wood

I found this mesmerising, & unsettling (I worry the mouse plague might feature in my sleep tonight)

Left me in quiet contemplation, on grief and on guilt, but also in hope. Just beautiful

Lucky us! We got to record an episode with National Treasure @charlottewoodwriter for SLoB yesterday. We went deep on craft, life, illness, grief and how to make a quiet story “spiky”. Coming soon at Secret Life of Books. #bookstagram #stoneyarddevotional #mynameislucybarton #elizabethstrout #booker

I find it hard to stop tears pricking my eyes, which alarms me.
It is to do with being greeted warmly by a stranger, offered peace for no reason, without question.
