There was a loud crack in the woods behind him. Then a thin tree fell beside him, and the bear-weasel-thing got startled away.
“Damn, beasty.” said a voice that was high and rough. Like a teenage boy with a really bad sore throat.
Julian opened his eyes to see a child sized man with the face of a 40 year old walking around the tree that just fell. His honey brown eyes were larger than a normal human's eyes, making him look much like a cartoon. He had pointed ears, and auburn red hair. His skin was a warm tan with a green undertone, making him look sickly. He wore a simple brown long-sleeve shirt with buttons at the collar, tan pants with several belts around his waist, and big brown boots.
Very monochromatic, Julian though.
“Hey! who’s you?” The man yelled at Julian.
Julian blinked, not knowing what to say.
“What? Can't ya speak?” The man's voice was higher pitched than an average 40 year old man's voice, but gruff at the same time. He had taken a step closer to Julian, but was hesitant.
“Um… my name is Julian.” Julian said.
“you’s a bird?” The man squinted at Julian.
The question was so absurd that Julian didn't know how to answer. He looked at himself just to make sure he still looked human, and then looked back at the grumpy looking child-man. “Erm, excuse me?”
“Ya think playing dumb will work with me? I’s know why ya here, and I told that embassy that I ain't got my rations yet. Sendin’ another collecta won't make me go any fasta.” The man said in disgust. He turned around to continue chaining up the log that he was working on.
Julian realized that if there was an embassy, that meant that he could get a hold of his family. He got to his feet and approached the man. “Excuse me, did you say embassy? Is there a city around here?”
The man stopped in mid motion and peered at Julian from the corner of his eye. “What ya playin’ at?” The man said in a low growl.

It was an animal that looked like a cross between a small brown bear and a weasel. It was very cute, except for the sharp claws on each of the paws.
Slowly Julian rose. Not trying to spook the creature. He walked back a couple of steps while its yellow eyes stared at him.
He had really only seen animals from behind glass or bars at zoos. He had never enjoyed being in nature, and never really had a desire to be close enough to non house pets to be able to pet them. He had a family dog, but she favored his dad over anyone else in the family. He loved that dog when he was a teenager, but as he got older, he did not spend as much time with her, and she was getting up in age. He had been looking to move out of his parents, right after graduating his senior year of high school which was only a month away. He wanted to move far enough that his parents couldn’t show up at his place unannounced, but was still within a day's trip away. He didn’t hate his parents, but he definitely wanted out of their house. And scrutiny. This meant he would only see Loulou when they came to visit. He was fine with that.
The bear-weasel-thing started to move close. Slowly at first. It didn’t care that it had to cross the brook to do so, soaking its under belly. Julian noticed that it was growling now, teeth bared.
Shit, It's going to attack. Julian thought as he kept slowly backing away. He frantically thought of anything he knew about wild life. Was it: you play-dead for bears and challenge weasels? Or was it: challenge bobcats? Or was it: play dead for all? What the hell even was this thing?
He swallowed, and decided playing dead probably was his best bet. Maybe it would leave him alone. He started to slowly get back on the ground, laying down as flat as he could. The bear-weasel-thing continued advancing, growling more audibly now. The creature seemed only inches from his head. Julian shut his eyes tight, gritting his teeth. He didn’t want to see the attack before it happened.
