As part of our campaign for comprehensive strike rights, we are organising a reading circle on ‘Striking against war’.

We will discuss Ottokar Luban's text ‘Mass strikes for peace and democracy in the First World War’.

All interested colleagues are welcome to join us.

Luban's text deals with the strike phase between 1916 and 1918 during the First World War. It covers in particular the strike against the trial of Karl Liebknecht in 1916, the bread strike in 1917 and the January strike in 1918.

Hundreds of thousands of workers took part in these strikes, protesting against war, hunger and exploitation.

In our reading circle, we want to discuss what triggered these political strikes and what role the trade unions, political parties and opposition shop stewards played in the strike movements.

We have invited labour law expert Benedikt Hopmann and author Klaus Dallmer, who, with their historical knowledge of the labour movement, can help us analyse the background to the mass strikes during the First World War.

ℹ️ Further information about our reading circle can be found at: https://www.rechtaufstreik.noblogs.org
