Clinical and Research Trial Designs: From Observational to Interventional Studies Clinical and Research Trial Designs are the backbone of evidence-based medicine and scientific discovery. In this tutorial, you’ll learn how studies are structured, why they differ, and how each design answers unique research questions. We begin with observational (non-interventional) studies such as case reports, case series, cross-sectional surveys, case–control studies, cohort studies, and ecological designs. Then, we move into interventional (experimental) studies, where researchers actively assign treatments. You’ll explore randomized controlled trials, cluster trials, crossover trials, quasi-experimental designs, adaptive trials, platform trials, and more.
