Southwest Power Pool Among Regional Grids Facing Challenges This Summer
A recent Summer Assessment from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has identified the Southwest Power Pool (SPP) as one of several regional power grids potentially facing challenges this summer. The assessment, covering June through September, also includes the Northeast Power Coordinating Council, New England, Midcontinent Independent System Operator, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, and PJM Interconnection. Oklahoma is part of the SPP region.
The assessment highlights a possible increase in the likelihood of constrained generation availability due to factors including elevated electricity demand, reduced wind and solar energy production, the impact of wildfires on electricity transfers and generator accessibility, and the ongoing retirement of power generation facilities. While the report anticipates sufficient generating resources to meet expected demand under standard conditions, margins are shrinking due to the retirement of established generation resources and a growing demand, particularly from large consumers like hyperscale data centers.
The possibility of warmer-than-average temperatures poses a significant challenge to the entire continental U.S. electric grid, introducing uncertainty related to weather patterns, forecasting accuracy, and energy consumption. This summer's anticipated electricity demand is also projected to be higher than in the previous four summers.
Wholesale electricity prices are forecast to be elevated this summer compared to last summer, particularly in the northeastern U.S. This price increase is linked to higher natural gas prices nationwide, a consequence of lower natural gas storage levels resulting from a colder-than-usual winter.
