“Family is a mess, eh?” Jamie could hear the words so clearly she nearly looked around for the source. As if her trusty dwarf would suddenly emerge from the rubble of what was once their favorite hiding hole in all of Thedas just to tell her the past, fuck, however many months, had been a cruel prank. And she’d have to punch him for that, but they’d laugh it off after. As though it never happened. It was wishful thinking, she knew. Varric was gone, she knew. The thought that they would meet up at their usual table once all of this was through, have a pint like they’d used to, share the stories of what a wild time it’d been to stop a mad God from breaking the world... Rubble. And every step she took in this place only seemed to shatter it further. Varric would see the silver lining in this. He’d find the humor in it somehow. A cruel joke was still a joke, end of the day.

Jamie paced, trying to situate where the threshold might have been, tried to picture walking through it as she had countless times in the past. The stench of sour ale and puke that seemed to rise from the floorboards in the summer heat. And all the times they all complained, even though they continued coming back. She counted the steps to where that table should be, in the same way she used to count the steps across the bridge in Lothering as a child. And she stood in the wreckage, breathing in the ashes and dust. She remembered coming here with Varric for the first time ever. Coming back for the first time once they’d crawled their way out of the deep roads. Both of them one sibling short, rattled, wounded, and refusing to admit it. Countless rounds of Wicked Grace, one too many tall tales, shared truths that were only hers to keep now.
