Leaving #Sundance2019, I saw over 15 world premiere docs. Here are eight great ones, some of which I hope to see later at #DOC10 (in alpha order):
AMERICAN FACTORY
APOLLO 11
HAIL SATAN?
HONEYLAND
KNOCK DOWN THE HOUSE
MIDNIGHT FAMILY
MIKE WALLACE IS HERE
ONE CHILD NATION
I was skeptical, but it's all true: The Macedonian nonfiction film HONEYLAND at #Sundance2019, about beekeeping & bad neighbors, is about as perfect as a doc can be.

#IAmMother mostly satisfies as another example of smart and slick indie sci-fi in the vein of "Ex Machina" -- but with a maternal bent. Screen Daily review #Sundance2019

Every film I saw, including the shorts, in my too-brief one-day #Sundance2019 jaunt was directed, co-directed and/or written by women. Not something I aimed for consciously, but pretty cool nevertheless.
If multigenerational crime family epics are your thing (and aside from a few exceptions they’re not mine, really), BIRDS OF PASSAGE should be up your alley. The families are indigenous Colombians, the product is marijuana, and the power resides with the matriarch. #Sundance2019
Now seated for my last #Sundance2019 movie, albeit in downtown Salt Lake City, BIRDS OF PASSAGE, about an indigenous Colombian getting involved in the ‘70s drug trade. Probably not a comedy?
I apparently missed the best short when I had to leave early to get to SLC, but the best of the documentary shorts I saw was Corina Schwingruber Ilić’s witty exercise in cruise ship formalism, ALL INCLUSIVE. #Sundance2019
It took coming to #Sundance2019 for me to finally get a Lyft driver who needs me to check out his SoundCloud.
GIVE ME LIBERTY: the day-in-the-life of a frantic medical transport driver narrative often feels forced, but the film’s in love with its characters, played by non-actors from Milwaukee’s Russian, black and disabled communities, and it’s very easy to share that love. #Sundance2019
First #Sundance2019 movie was Petra Costa’s THE EDGE OF DEMOCRACY, a superb, sometimes visceral primer on up-to-the-minute Brazilian politics. Next up: GIVE ME LIBERTY, a Russian-language dark comedy set in Milwaukee, and then a program of documentary shorts.
