Surface Water Flooding Focus:

What is surface water flooding?

It happens when heavy rain overwhelms drainage systems or can't soak into the ground fast enough. Instead of flowing away, water pools on streets, gardens & low-lying areas.

🌍 #ClimateChange is driving more extreme weather – from hotter, drier spells to heavier rainfall and #flooding. 🌧️🌡️

In the UK, winters are getting wetter, and sudden downpours are causing #surfacewaterflooding in towns and cities. These changes are already impacting communities and businesses.

In recent years we’ve seen major #SurfaceWaterFlooding linked to storms like:
⛈️#StormFranklin (2022)
⛈️#StormBabet (2023)
⛈️#StormHenk (2024)
All of these brought intense bursts of rain that overwhelmed drains and roads, causing localised flooding and damage.

Climate change is causing heavier rainfall and increasing the risk of #SurfaceWaterFlooding.

#SustainableDrainageSystems (#SuDS) help manage this by slowing down, storing, and soaking away excess rainwater, reducing pressure on drains and managing #flood risk.

🌿 #SuDS are designed to mimic natural drainage by slowing, storing & filtering rainwater, just like in the countryside! They help manage surface water flooding & reduce pressure on drainage systems.

From waterlogged kerbside to functional #SuDS, we've replanted these #raingardens to capture and absorb rainfall to help prevent #surfacewaterflooding.

Filled with pollinator friendly plants, they will also support local #biodiversity.
