As of the recent AGM, I'm officially a trustee for Newhaven Historical Society! It's such a great group of people to work with, and an opportunity for me to develop more public history! #SussexCoast #SussexHistory newhavenhistoricalsociety.org.uk
Photo of a slender green narrow door with 1A chalked on it, no window, and an oval peephole, currently closed, on the top half of the door. It stands near some info boards on Newhaven Workhouse.
Photo of the closed, oval peephole in the door. What terror it must have given the poor inmates, locked in because they were poor.
Did some research today while alone in the museum. Gave myself a fright turning the corner on the way to the research room -- the lighting from the window was on the workhouse door while everything else was dimly lit. It made me shiver, especially that peephole. #SussexHistory

❓ Are any of my followers familiar with Pagham Harbour and Ferry? Ferry and Sidlesham are mentioned in a Sea Fencible letter from 1803, but I'm not clear about the route of the ferry. The letter descrimes the difficulty getting Selsey Sea Fencibles to Brighton by land. #NavalHistory #SussexHistory

Photo looking north from Newhaven Fort, overlooking the River Ouse and Newhaven's marina.
A running comment made during my tours is how much people didn't realise what a rich history Newhaven has. It was just a place they drove through, or thought ugly and industrial. But it has 1000 years of fascinating history. Now they want to know more. I love that. #SussexCoast #SussexHistory
Today, the Friends of Eastbourne Seafront's new 2025 Welcome Team members came for a tour of the Tower to help familiarise themselves with the unique places along the seafront so they can help visitors this Summer!

Photo looking across the old channel of the Ouse from Denton Island (not originally an island), with the bridge across it. The water is high, almost touching the bottom of the bridge. The seventeenth century Bridge Inn pub is just across the water, named, of course, for the bridge when it was built.
Photo looking south, showing how full the river is, with just inches to go until it overtops and floods this section of Denton Island. The new swing bridge is in the distance, which takes all the traffic around Newhaven now.
The River Ouse in Newhaven is high this afternoon, so I was able to get a photo of what the original channel looked like before the cut was made to straighten the river. This was the site of the ferry and bridge, connecting the high street and the old Brighton road. #SussexCoast #SussexHistory
Screen grab from The National Archives catalogue website, with the description: Newhaven, River Ouse: Manor of Mucking; Earl of Sheffield.
Screen grab of map of Newhaven (formerly Meeching), with Lord Sheffield's lands along the Ouse and coast shaded in pink. He had rights to almost all of the Ouse below Newhaven, and also along the coast to Tide Mills, just before Seaford. The other important land owner was William Elphick, who had the waterfront of Newhaven proper, and the old manor of Meeching on the hill.
Screen grab of the map's key, showing all lands marked with a 52 belong to the Earl of Sheffield, at 'Meeching'.
Time for some walking tour prep. Hmmm... why do I think this might be a typo? Shouldn't this be a record for Manor of Meeching? (the original name for Newhaven). Or am I missing something? I can't get to the TNA right now to find out. 🤨 #SussexCoast #SussexHistory
