The Transgender Day of Remembrance has become a sacred moment for our community, where we commemorate our dead -- and rededicate ourselves to fighting like hell for the living. #TDOR2023
This is also a time that I implore our friends and allies to be there for us, to listen to what we face, to open your hearts to what we feel. #TDOR2023
Yet, please also note that we persist. In spite of everything we are put through, whether at the end of a murderer's firearm or by the stroke of a politician's pen, we remain exactly who we are: we are transgender. #TDOR2023

As we come together to honor those who have been lost, I think about what it is to be transgender today, in a time where merely admitting you are trans could cost you your livelihood, your healthcare, and even your life. #TDOR2023
This rise in anti-trans hate crimes is consistent with the anti-transgender rhetoric we have seen, as well as an overall increase in anti-transgender murders over the last several years. #TDOR2023
According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation's 2022 Hate Crimes Statistics, released this October, we have seen a significant, 40% rise in reported anti-transgender incidents over 2021. #TDOR2023
Even large corporations have been affected, as Target moved to remove merchandise after facing violence against their employees, and Anheuser-Busch faced bomb threats and boycotts all for making a single can featuring the face of trans influencer Dylan Mulvaney. #TDOR2023
At this same time, we have seen trans community events and drag story times attacked by violent bigots seeking to shut down any public presentation of trans and gender non-conforming behavior. #TDOR2023
Our rights are routinely under threat, as state houses across the US -- not to mention the governments of the UK and elsewhere -- seek to remove transgender people from our lives and livelihoods, and do their level best to outlaw even the slightest care for transgender people. #TDOR2023
Transgender people have been cast as villains, and presented as rapists and predators seeking to corrupt the youth. #TDOR2023
This year, I would hasten to note, has also seen a major rise in anti-transgender rhetoric and anti-transgender legislation, both of which have strongly contributed to an overall anti-trans attitude in the United States and elsewhere. #TDOR2023
They join the 320+ killed worldwide in 2023, and the thousands that we know of over the last 25 years, with, again, the majority of those who are murdered being transgender women, as well as being black or other people of color. #TDOR2023
We know that anti-trans violence is a very intersectional issue. This year has seen more than two dozen people murdered in the United States due to anti-transgender violence and hatred, with over half being Black trans women, and nearly 90% being People of Color. #TDOR2023
The initial goals of the Remembering Our Dead project, and later of the Transgender day of Remembrance, is to increase awareness of the issue of anti-transgender violence, and to give a place for those of us in our community to honor and mourn those we have lost. #TDOR2023
Rita Hester’s death led to the creation of the Remembering Our Dead project. From it, the Transgender Day of Remembrance was born. #TDOR2023
A quarter century ago, on November 28th, 1998, a Black, transgender woman by the name of Rita Hester was found, murdered, in her own apartment in Alston, Massachusetts. The case surrounding her death has languished for years, and will likely never be solved. #TDOR2023
For nearly two and a half decades, the transgender community, along with our allies and friends, have come together to mourn those we have lost, to provide support and love to our survivors, and to honor our community's resilience. #TDOR2023

We recognize the challenges and barriers that trans and non-binary people face in society, especially in accessing employment, health care, education and legal services. We also acknowledge the resilience and strength of trans and non-binary people who continue to fight for their rights and dignity.
