UoL EpiDoc Study Group met this morning. Things we're planning for the next few weeks:
- marking up an inscription in #EpiDoc and Wikidata, compare the possibilities/affordances
- mark up a notebook page and an epigraphic edition, discuss differences
- do EpiDoc & epigraphy simultaneously

Home EFES (EpiDoc Front End Services) is a custom and readily customizable platform for publication and search/indexing of EpiDoc files, based on the Kiln platform - EpiDoc/EFES

#TEIFriday
I'm working on plans for a replacement for/radical updating of the EFES publication tool (github.com/EpiDoc/EFES/...), which will soon be ten years old—and based on even older, now deprecated/obsolete underlying software. Let's make this more sustainable and minimal!

Issue should be fixed in a push I just made to github.com/EpiDoc/Style...

I've tested with EFES and it seems okay, but it needs more robust testing before the next release. If you want to see results, copy that file manually into your epidoc stylsheets folder in EFES (vel sim)

Correct behaviour would be:
Interpretative: χαριστέ̄ριον
becomes Diplomatic: ΧΑΡΙΣΤΕΡΙΟΝ

Reported behaviour (because we forgot that macron U+0304 could appear as a diacritic in Greek epigraphy:

Diplomatic: ΧΑΡΙΣΤε̄ΡΙΟΝ

Fourth issue: Anna Loro reported that epsilon/omicron with macron (orthographic signs normally representing short Greek vowels, used as long vowels in some archaic alphabets) transforms incorrectly in diplomatic view (i.e. retains diacritic, remains lowercase).

Note the dev version of epidoc.stoa.org/gl/dev/supp-... has now updated, showing the open list in the expanded Schema, and slightly improved prose explaining how to use this attribute and suggested values.

#TEIFriday
It also does not preclude or preempt conversation about more coherent and consistent LOD ontologies of such terms, which is ongoing. (I hope the #EpiDoc Schema will inform such discussion, of course, as it is itself driven by input from many epigraphists, dozens of projects and datasets.)

These are changes to the EpiDoc Schema (now visible at epidoc.stoa.org/schema/dev/t...), but as this is an open list they will have no impact on validity of any EpiDoc files on future releases. It just encourages consistency, all else being equal.

Third issue, after discussion on EpiDoc-Markup list, among maintainers, and at the #EpiDoc workshop this week, I've added two new values to the open list for @evidence: "iconography" (subject or theme of art accompanying inscription) and "artistic style" (stylistic or decorative features)

I've tried to tidy it up a bit. I don't know how long it takes to re-render the dev page (linked above). The released version of the Guidelines will be refreshed in February with EpiDoc 9.8.

Second issue: The EpiDoc Guidelines page epidoc.stoa.org/gl/dev/supp-... is (among other inadequacies) out of date regarding the open list of values for @evidence on <origDate> (i.e. most common dating criteria terms suggested by EpiDoc)

Can anyone confirm that the TEI website being down today is (a) not just me, (b) a known issue, (c) being addressed?

Or in raw.githubusercontent.com/EpiDoc/Sourc... immediately

Apologies to everyone practicing with EpiDoc in the last few months for whom validation/content completion wasn't working! I've now pushed the fix to git; you should be able to see it in dev shortly. In deployed Guidelines in February.

First issue: an over-eager upgrade to HTTPS urls in a previous release of the EpiDoc Guidelines inadvertently broke some url-like namespace declarations (@schematypens) in the downloadable EpiDoc template.

After a super useful #EpiDoc workshop in Glasgow, and Textual Editing Lab seminar at the end of it, I'm spending the train trip home pushing a couple of newly identified issues with EpiDoc schema, guidelines and stylesheets.

Has there been a mood change the past ten years? Of course they've both been de facto standards for donkeys years but there was also always that person who was like, "I hate TEI because it's so popular!" Like that them cool

At a seminar today, talking about open formats/standards, I found myself saying, "and *of course* TEI" and, "and *of course* EpiDoc" without anyone feeling the need to be apologetic or batting an eye.

#TEIFriday (4bis): these office hours are kind of analogous to, but somewhat more modest than, the @teiconsortium.bsky.social's Community Calls www.tei-c.org/activities/c... which I also super recommend if you want a broader bunch of text encoding folks to chat with.

#TEIFriday (3):

We're going to run a short workshop in December to get people to help improve the recommendations for encoding SNAP:DRGN style interoperability person-data in TEI XML (Personography module), which I started talking about under this hashtag a few weeks ago. We need your expertise!

Also in #TEIFriday news:

A Cypro-Aegean EpiDoc Working Group has just been established, chaired by Ester Salgarella, and will meet for the first time in the next couple weeks. Very excited to build on work with Mycenaean and Wingspread, and to engage with many super smart new colleagues.
