#TheCreator presents a kind of self-righteous dystopia vs. a quasi-utopia, which is never really challenged. The people that would offer insight in the film have adopted the position that the stakes are all or nothing anhilation. So the betrayal becomes less 'good action.'
#TheCreator on a meta-level, perhaps I didn't like the movie more because I think sci-fi should offer useful questions. Is a debate about toaster slavery useful? We could have one. We can all have heated positions on the topic, because life is like a talk show, but does it make for good sci-fi?
#TheCreator on a meta-level, philosophical statements, like AI-robots teaching their young that they were created to be slaves, were left completely unexamined. The AI-robots looked sympathetic at that point in the story, but nothing is examined in the 'fog of war'.
#TheCreator bringing it back to the question of why I liked b didn't love the plot. Maybe it relied too much on 'fog of war.' The AI-robot 'antagonist' wasn't well defined. Our own flaws made us the de facto antagonist. That worked well in Avatar, but it didn't quite work in this.
#TheCreator the movie didn't really delve into the AI-robot and human ecosystem in New Asia. The AI-robots just seemed to productively coexist. The AI-robot militants were useful in some nebulous way. They seemed to function as a self-protection organization b wo conflicts with locals.
#TheCreator there are a number of interesting dimensions to the quasi-morality of creating AI-robots. They are manufactured products constructed for a purpose, but let's say humans consider them friends. What would constitute unethical/abusive treatment of AI-robot friends?
#TheCreator 'social benefit' is abstract. Let's say the benefit of humanistic machines means that the average work week can be cut to twenty hours wo loss of buying power? (Twenty hours of work would allow a person to afford housing and raise a family.)
#TheCreator the tone of the two systems is different. Consumer products don't necessarily offer benefit to anyone but the people that sell them. Should humanistic machines be produced without some kind of legitimate and significant social benefit?
#TheCreator I guess the question is should AI-robots be manufactured if it's just another way for the wealthy to dominate the global political economy, as opposed to eliminating poverty--which would require ideas by academics and work by politicians and acceptance by the governed.
#TheCreator the thing about SciFi is that it raises philosophical questions. What should the purpose of something like AI-robot be? Consumer products akin to household appliances? In a better world, the technology offers the potential to eliminate poverty and minimize human work.
#TheCreator the protags perspective in the beginning was quite believable; not just because of brainwashing, war mentality, but also because robots aren't humans. I want to add that they were created to improve the lives of humans...but I'm not sure that was the case in the film. They just existed.
#TheCreator Well, I'm conflating my first impression of the film and my recent second viewing. I don't hate the film now but the pugnacious elements, the militatry logics, are much more odious.
That aside, focusing on the plot, why didn't I love?
#TheCreator a number of elements in the film were good. The New Asia location was interesting. Loved the cinematography.
I liked the film but was left w the impression that I could have loved a film in that setting, and with the question of why didn't I love.
#TheCreator the military logics were clearly meant to be disturbing. The AI-robots were presented as human.
The protags journey: 'AI-robots aren't real' to they are and they shouldn't be hunted like animals.
#TheCreator the Gaza genocide seems to have changed the way I experience movies. The Creator doesn't feel like propaganda, but the military logics make me think of the EDF. Waging peace without borders. If we fail all is lost. The 'stone throwers' are owned like champs.
