DOORJAMBS REUSED AS GRAVE COVER, C3-C2 BCE. MUSEO ARCHEOLOGICO NAZIONALE DI TARANTO

Reused together with two other stone slabs as a covering for a pit grave of the C2 BCE, the slab originally constituted the jamb of the door of a public building of the C3 BCE, probably a gymnasium, judging by the graffiti found on its plastered surface. Indeed an inscription appears between the young face with tall hat of the Phrygian type in the upper area and the rowboat in the lower part; it evokes Homer, poorly written: Τὸμ Πριάμου καλέω θρασύν Ἕκτορα, "I call brave Hector, the son of Priam". In the line below, the epigraph is repeated, by a hand even more unsure. The original public building was from Taranto's last Greek century, but the grave pit dates from after the Roman conquest.

#SpoliaSunday brings us, along with many vacationing Italians, to #Taranto and its Archaeological Museum to see how #Roman #Tarentum reused stone from a public building of #Greek #Taras. The Roman conquest was bloody and brutal, and Tarantine treasures were carted off to #Rome. #AncientBluesky 🏺

GARLAND SARCOPHAGUS, C. 200 CE. MUSEO ARCHEOLOGICO NAZIONALE DI TARANTO

This extremely simple white marble box, which came to the MArTa from the monastery of S. Antonio, has a strikingly kinetic undulating garland in high relief as its main feature. Though an Eros of adolescent appearance seems to be holding it up at the centre (its ends are fixed with bulls' heads), in reality there is no sense of it being draped over his shoulders: its own elasticity supports it quite easily, making the upward curve exactly equal to the two downward curves on either side. The downward curves are made of symmetrical bunches of fruit, and above them are two lion-head protomes. This is provincial Roman sculpture, yes, but it manages to retain a bit of springy Greek energy.

#SarcophagusSaturday catapults us back to ancient #Roman #Tarentum, today's #Taranto, where this #sarcophagus has a satisfying simplicity and a touch of #Greek energy. #AncientBluesky 🏺

FUNERARY URN, C1 BCE. MUSEO ARCHEOLOGICO NAZIONALE DI TARANTO

This funerary urn was found with its lid and complete with its ashes, in an undefined spot outside the ancient city of Tarentum, today's Taranto, a Greek colony conquered in the C3 BCE by the Romans. The practice of cremation was popular in the C1 BCE among the upper classes of Tarentum, and this urn, though simple, has a delicate beauty. It's decorated on all sides with a garland of olive leaves tied at the corner with ribbon, and a petalled flower above the lower part of the garland at upper centre. The lid has traces of colour and doubtless this urn was richly painted, the green leaves of the olive suggesting eternity and the red or yellow flower evoking rebirth.

This funerary #urn from #Taranto, and still there in the @museo_marta, shows how #Roman #Tarentum buried its wealthy. This urn, unusually, still has cremated ashes inside it. #AncientBluesky 🏺

The climax of the Carthaginian invasion of #Italy was reached when #Tarentum changed sides in 212 BC. The takeover of the city was a carefully planned coup by Hannibal and members of the city's democratic faction who opened the gates to Hannibal's army.
