It’s obvious is how lost and confused Annie feels.
Unlike Joe’s shot (from yesterday) which reveals his decision, the point of this shot is not a reveal, but to sit with Annie’s confused emotions in this moment right after her fight with her husband Terry.

What’s interesting here is what we DON’T see — Annie’s (Faye Marsay) face in the shot or the mirror.

Reflection on marble; prismatic moving shots; sound mix; softly backlit 2-shot.
These elements work on their own, but hit with full weight as the scene ends - the shots aren’t just gorgeous, they set up the scene’s conceit and add heft to its emotional payoff.
Director Ana Kokkinos and DP Carolyn Constantine created some of my (Mel’s) favourite Aussie-made frames of 2023 within this #TenPoundPoms scene.

the scene cuts back to the medium shot, the camera moves in a semi-circle to add a bit of a feeling of dynamism to the scene, then the car door closing is used as a good cut point to transition to a wide of Kate and Annie driving away.

When Kate turns, the shot racks to her face, giving us a closeup of her expression.
Once we’ve seen Kate’s response — which is also simply more interesting than waiting for Annie to traverse the large patch of grass getting to the car — the scene cuts back . . .

As Kate waits for Annie, she adjusts her rearview mirror, then Annie runs from her hut in the background. Both characters in motion in the medium shot draw our attention, so the cut to a 180 degree closeup of the mirror isn’t confusing.
Like our shots yesterday, this scene from #TenPoundPoms 1.03 uses car rearview mirrors, here with different goals, shots, and effects!
The scene is careful to draw our attention to three important components at the top: Kate (Michelle Keegan), Annie (Faye Marsay), and the rearview mirror.

When Terry and Ron (Warren Brown, Rob Collins) pull up to an off-books medical dispensary, the over-shoulder shot doesn't directly show Terry's face, but the car mirror shows us all his reactions to both Rob’s explanation, and haggling in the distance with the vulturous dispensers.
