In spite of what hopeful Democrats keep saying, Texas is a deep-red state—and there’s no evidence to the contrary. Gerrymandering isn’t an excuse, and it isn’t the problem. Just look at the results of statewide federal and state elections: the verdict is clear. Fifteen years of relentless organizing turned Georgia purple. Two Beto O’Rourke campaigns in Texas didn’t move the needle. Today, as Texas doubles down on gerrymandering to squeeze Democrats out of office, Democrats in other states are busy justifying their own gerrymanders as tactical necessities. Fine—if they’re willing to admit that such tactics mean the Republic is dead, and there’s nothing left to rise from its ashes. In a democracy, the fight is at the ballot box. It means mobilizing voters and offering them a real choice—not gaming the map to avoid the hard work of persuasion. If Democrats want to solve their “Texas problem,” they should run serious candidates for statewide office—and fund them to win. If they can’t figure out how to expose Paxton and Abbott for what they are—hypocrites and liars—then maybe they don’t deserve to lead. Republicans can turn a Sydney Sweeney jeans ad into a culture war flashpoint. Democrats can’t even do that with a neo-Nazi like Nick Fuentes. That’s the problem—not the electoral map.
