Close up of two hands pulling a piece of fabric off of a blue inked linoleum sheet in a 1inch grid design. The fabric is from a blue Oxford shirt, the front right side of the shirt, having been cut from the garment. The press is wood and red enamel, like a clamshell that presses the lino and fabric between these two pieces of wood.

We cut our thrifted shirts out of the sewn seams so we have flat pieces of fabric to print on. Our Lino sheets are about 12”x19” to fit on our manual press bed. #printingonfabric #textileprint #surfacedesign #repurposedtextiles #thereprintery #garmentsewing #sustainabletextiles

Michelle wears a purple gingham shirt and sits at wood table with a white Juki sewing machine, photographed from standing position over her facing the back of the machine, as she sews half square triangles of two different prints, a purples stripe that has a blue dot reprinted over it, and a thin white based plaid that has a yellow stripe reprinted onto it. In the top right corner is a colorful woven basket with a knitting project peeking out the top of it.

We love to see the different prints together! This is when the magic really happens, putting one print next to the other.

We like to carve repeating patterns in small rubber blocks to print directly onto larger linoleum blocks as a fast way to transfer the design. Here is a 10.5” square Lino block that’s been printed in red ink so as to be used as a guide for where to cut the linoleum. Three linoleum cutting tools rest nearby.

The finished pattern is cut and here it is sitting on the printing table inked up in white ink. A pad of ink is rolled out to evenly print the linoleum
Plate, and the roller /brayer is nearby, covered in white ink. The white ink can site open and palette knives lay next to it.

The linoleum pattern is now printed. Here dries the printed fabric. It is white fabric, repurposed bedsheets an thrifted white shirts, printed with white ink. The white on white is subtle and best seen from an angle. The seven printed fabrics are 10.5” square and are clipped with wooden clothes pins to a white wire clothes drying rack.

A polkadot carved linoleum printing plate covers the bottom portion of the image. The plate is a polkadot the size of a 1” round circle shape. It is inked w a very pale blue color. The upper portion of the image shows the 6” square of ink rolled out, as well as a pile of ink that was mixed to create the color with a palette knife. The palette that is placed on is clear glass, and this shows the table underneath which has a piece of canvas with ink and design residue from patterns printed previously.

A marigold yellowy-orange color is inked on a polkadot plate that is about 13” x 19”. It is white, made from cardboard and the dots are made from hole-punched cardboard. The dot is about 1/4”, the size of a hole punch, and they are glued in a grid pattern about 1/2” apart. It’s been sealed so it can be inked and cleaned to be used many times.
There is a brayer-roller inked w the marigold color and this sits on a clear glass palette. On the edge of the photo are placed cans of Gamblin oil based reliefs printing inks as well as tubes of Cranfield oil based printing ink.

We love the simplicity of a polkadot pattern. They are such a simple graphic element, but provide a joyful element of color to everything we print! #polkadot #textileprint #textileart #sustainable #textilereuse #thereprintery

Charlotte wears a printmaking apron and is poised to print a linoleum plate w rose color ink. It is a 1-inch grid pattern. Michelle in a grey tunic dress uses a rotary cutter to cut printed fabric they made. They are talking while working in the studio together. A finished quilt of many colors hangs to the right of them.
