An image of a table on which sits 8 mismatched bowls and one small glass jar. Each contains a different ground up substance: green mica-filled sand, tan/rust colored sand, crushed up quartz with mica, pure mica, red/purple sand, lava beach rocks, volcanic ash, crushed brick, random stone shards.

After a few days of working on cups, bowls, and wares where I have to think “functional”, I have a day of vessel decoration. Which basically means an aggregate party!!!

A medium-sized moon jar with a small foot and large mouth. It sits on a stack of black books against a black marbled background. The vase is light red clay but coated heavily in black, brown and white textured sips. There are patches of sand and drips of burgundy randomly positioned around the piece.

Last textured moon jar from the test batch I unloaded this week. Back to the studio today to decorate cups + bowls. The challenge is how to translate this surface to functional wares? It’s gonna take some experimenting.

A medium-sized moon jar constructed from two hemispheres. It had a large mouth and small base. There are dark clay undertones of texture with translucent white slip strokes mixed in. Sand coats many areas, and small lava stones embedded into the pot have begun to melt and form tiny drips on the surface.

Happy Friday! Can’t stop sharing textures from the last firing. This one is a class demo where I taught two-part construction. I embedded some lava stones given to me by a student, and they started to melt in cool ways.

“Winter Moss” curvy vase. Medium-sized with textured sand/stone-like slip that has a mossy appearance. Translucent white slip with more opaque drips.

One of last year’s early texture explorations. I love the subtle white on white drips, but I’ve since been exploring a more layered effect, too. I can also see this with a bit of sage green drippiness. So many ideas, so few hours.
