Hey #booksky, I could use a few recommendations for #BlackHistoryMonth. I lined up 4 books: #stampedfromthebeginning, #thecoloroflaw, #freedomisaconstantstruggle, and #blackfortunes. Then I was injured walking my dog, so while on my ass I've gotten through almost 3 of them. I did not expect to -->
This was a very well layed out explanation of how intentionally segregated America was & why. And how its effects are still with us in housing, schools, businesses, public services and more. #thecoloroflaw #richardrothstein #booksky
It was not forced. States enabled locals to set their own zoning. Locals could have chosen density. Instead they locked things in place and pushed single family on larger and larger lots with no mixed use. Tragic. Locals need to own their racist and classist and tragic mistakes

Why this matters?
A People's History of the United States-by Howard Zin
#TheColorofLaw
Instead of taking away pathways for inner-city kids to break the poverty cycle, they should be copying what works and roll ir out for the males who have fallen behind.
I hate ugly speech. I wish that we were more civil with each other. Unfortunately, #Project2025 is not about civility. It is about leveraging every outrage as a means to take more power from the people. Charlie Kirk is one of those outrages.
#TheColorofLaw.
I feel like Left America (especially POC) should read #TheColorofLaw by #RichardRothstein so that they can understand what is happening to them (us). The situation of today is pretty analogous to what happens to Black America.
#TheColorofLaw applies to the wealthy as well.

#TheColorOfLaw is a doozy. I think I have some “to do’s” after reading it.
Highly recommended reading. Will open your eyes on a few things you thought you knew what happened, but you were taught wrongly as was I.
“Prohibited in this fashion, polluting industry has no option but to locate near African American residences.” #thecoloroflaw
“The Color of Law” by R Rothstein is scalding & blunt:
“Zoning thus has two faces. One face... attempted to keep African Americans out of white neighborhoods by making it difficult for lower-income families... to live in white neighborhoods.” @skcopeland.bsky.social

Local Zoning and fed lending laws made white people rich, #theColorOfLaw
Zoning ruined us. Low density forces 2x + the driving here than in Europe but sure blame cars that are only necessary due to the awful mandated land use policies came first requiring them…..

"Undoing the effects of de jure [by right of law] segregation will be incomparably difficult. To make a start, we will first have to contemplate what we have collectively and, on behalf of our government, accept responsibility."
#TheColorOfLaw #RichardRothstein #lastparagraph
"If police had arrested, rather than encouraged, leaders of mob violence when African Americans moved into previously white neighborhoods, racial transitions would have been smoother."
#TheColorOfLaw #RichardRothstein
"If the government had told developers that they could have FHA guarantees only if the homes they built were open to ALL (emphasis added), integrated working-class suburbs would likely have matured with both African Americans and whites sharing the benefits.

"In the twentieth century, federal, state, and local officials did not resist majority opinion with regard to race.
Instead, they endorsed and reinforced it, actively and aggressively."
#TheColorOfLaw #RichardRothstein
"...under our constitutional system, government has not merely the option bu the responsibility to resist racially discriminatory views, even when - especially when - a majority holds them. "

The Color of Law reveals how government policies created and reinforced racial segregation in America. A must-read for understanding how these practices still affect Black communities today. #SystemicRacism #BlackHistory #TheColorOfLaw #HousingDiscrimination
