I guess Michael Stipe wasn’t quite right about it it starting with an earthquake
birds and snakes, and aeroplanes.

🎧The End of the World As We Know It - various authors ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

An anthology of short stories, some more memorable than others & some stronger than others. There are some whacky imaginations out there!

Krell Laboratories Podcast: The Movies and Mr. King (2025) YouTube video by doctormorbuis

I recorded a long podcast with a couple of my besties about this year's crop of Stephen King adaptations. We also talked about the new anthology of stories set in the universe of the Stand.

Forgot to mention 'Grace' earlier, really liked that one. Fantastic setting.
Before I stop beating the dead horse: I didn't mind The Tripps and the weird mermaid story, because at least they broke the monotony of generic apocalypse 101.

Should say the quality of stories greatly improves in the second half of the book. Some of the post-superflu stories are downright good.
Apparently it's more difficult to write about societal breakdown than it looks, so credit to King there.

Flagg supporters like Nadine and Harold are interesting because they *choose* to follow him, and have a mixture of good and bad qualities.
Most of the antagonists of TEOTWAWKI are...not that complicated. A lot of icky and gratuitous stuff. Some are literal cannibals.

Didn't like the angle a couple of writers went with, where the super-flu keeps mutating and either kills off or sterilizes the rest of the human race.
The ending of The Stand and Stephen King are clear that didn't happen. It makes the original book basically pointless.

Anyway, my picks for good stories: Wrong Fucking Place, Wrong Fucking Time, The African Painted Dog, He's A Righteous Man.
Bad: Room 24, Across the Pond*, In a Pig's Eye.
Everything else blurs together.
* REALLY comes across as someone who has never visited the UK

I don't like how most stories come down to obviously evil vs obviously good people.
Some of Flagg's followers in The Stand were evil (Judy and The Kid), but some had mental health issues (the Trashcan Man, Lloyd), and most were pretty normal.

I keep having extra thoughts but: there should not be cannibalism in the world of The Stand.
If 99.4% of people die in a few weeks, food shortages will not be a problem for years, because tinned food is a thing.

Also, bold choice to lead with 'Room 24,' probably the worst story in the whole collection.
Sorry Caroline Kepnes, I liked You.
(For one book).

Flagg is a loser in the original book. He's dangerous in the same way as the superflu, because he is instinctively destructive and brings out the worst in people, not because he's some mastermind.

Flagg, Stephen King's uber-villain, is also subtly different from the original books.
Flagg in The Stand's influence is limited to dreams and some magic in his immediate presence.
Most of TEOTWAWKI's authors depict him as a more conventional antichrist.

A recurring theme is that most of them didn't need to be set in the world of The Stand.

The End of the World as we Know It is an uneven collection of stories.
I really liked a couple like 'Wrong Fucking Place, Wrong Fucking Time,' but you also have dreck like 'Across the Pond,' which is below the standards of most fanfiction.
Quality control wasn't great.

I'm late to #TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt (New Tales of Stephen King's #TheStand) but I'm reading it now and I would add that (and The Stand itself, duh) to this list. Also (re)read any of his actual books. The books are so much better than the adaptations, even when the adaptations are good.

The older I get, the harder I lean into darkness as catharsis when things around me are feeling a bit bleak. So this year, facing imminent unemployment on the personal front, plus…you know [gestures broadly], I’m revisiting one of my favorite apocalypses.

Cloudy weather today. Pretty good-sized headache even though I took Advil. Gonna try to finish #TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt. Pretty fun #TheStand anthology, #horrorsky and #booksky. I can do audiobooks with headache. Reading braille with headache? Forget about it.
