The third in a series of slides which have a parchment coloured background and subtle design of line drawn Roman elements (pillar, centurion, aqueduct, vase, coins, chariot race etc). A red seal with a gold embossed Q in the top right corner. This slide has the title “Synopsis”. The synopsis reads: A king by day. Shadow by night... Long ago, the kingdom's noble houses rebelled against the goddess... and for their treachery, the firstborn of each noble family was cursed. One with perilous beauty. One with destructive knowledge. One with insatiable bloodlust. But the royal house Mortara received the worst affliction of all. For while the king exists during the day, he fades into nothingness at night...until his twenty-first birthday, when he will be lost to the shadows forever. Now an acolyte has arrived at court. Like all the second-born children, she's destined to serve the goddess and become a Seer...only Cerise Solon has no gift of foretelling. In fact, she has no magical gift at all. Instead, she's surrounded by courtiers and priests - smiling sycophants whose hearts are filled with secrets and lies. And at the centre sits His Majesty Kian Hannibal Mortara, with his haunting eyes, sharp tongue, and an unerring ability to send her pulse skittering. As the spectre of his twenty-first birthday - and the full force of his curse - approaches, the kingdom holds its breath. There's only one way to save a dying king... and it lies with the one person who's hiding the biggest secret of all. Cerise.
The fourth in a series of slides which have a parchment coloured background and subtle design of line drawn Roman elements (pillar, centurion, aqueduct, vase, coins, chariot race etc). A red seal with a gold embossed Q in the top right corner. This slide has the title “Review” there is a red ribbon with five gold stars indicating a 5/5 rating. The review says: Melissa Landers delivers a gripping dark fantasy in The Half King, blending classic elements with a fresh, engaging style. This upper YA novel masterfully balances a hero's quest with a journey of self-discovery in a richly detailed setting shaped by curses, magic, and betrayal. The protagonist's journey is filled with challenges and subtle twists, keeping the plot dynamic and engaging. The side characters are well-rounded and contribute depth to the story, while the slow-burn romance - complete with just a hint of spice - adds emotional stakes without overshadowing the adventure. The world-building is a standout, with intricate details that make the Allied Realm and its history come alive. From the effects of the goddess's curses to the interplay of courtly intrigue, the setting is as compelling as the characters. A late-stage revelation left me eager for more, and while the book works well as a standalone, I'm thrilled it's part of a duology. Highly recommended for fans of dark fantasy who love nuanced characters, slow-burn romance, and a richly immersive world.
