I’m unsure why there are some harsh reviews, and I don’t mean in a critiquing sort of way. The reviews seem pretty mixed.

The vignette “Alicia Who Sees Mice” ends on such a haunting note.
Couple that with its opening sentence and the whole vignette shifts into the realm of the frightening.

A salient & timely reminder of what it is to experience a glass ceiling through the heart, mind, & body of a child. Esperanza’s moments of unwanted sexual contact twist guts & belong to us all.

Every time I read #TheHouseonMangoStreet I am reminded how I didn’t read it when I was a teen and how much I needed it back then. As a girl and young woman I was always on the wrong side of what I was supposed to be. Esperanza represents that battle btwn our supposed roles and rejections of that.
One of my favorite lines in literature comes from #TheHouseOnMangoStreet: “You can never have too much sky.”
How does that line land with you? What does it make you see or feel?

Talk about the effectiveness of the implied in the book The House on Mango Street.
Esperanza’s feet ground her in the world.
Feet can be thought of as a symbol of the tired, aching reality many feel in their bones, day in and day out.
