So close did Makini stay to Rani at all times that there were even rumours, never really spurred on by more than the devotion of the Royal Mjuzi to her Queen, that Makini had in fact helped in ways beyond her duties as a mjuzi to facilitate the third and final pregnancy of Rani. That she had been there at the conception, and had participated in the acts which would bear the first and only son of Queen Rani and King Kion, Jua. How Makini being present and participating in the acts taken between the king and queen helped to bring about new life into the world was never really explained by said rumours, but they were nonetheless whispered about incessantly by all those who liked to gossip and those who enjoyed sordid tales of lusts that crossed limits many thought uncrossable. But to any animal close to the royal family, these rumours were baseless. After all, Makini and Rani's friendship ran close — but not as close as to suggest anything outside of the ordinary. Even taking into account Makini's magnanimous devotion towards her queen, they could not fathom anything else than a strong friendship between the mandril and lioness. And certainly not in such a way as to suggest that Makini was involved when Kion and Rani mated, or to suggest that the three had formed some sort of sexual or romantic triad. Besides, Makini was certainly not as close to Kion as she was to Rani, even though she helped him with whatever matters arose during the course of his reign, once even saving him from a scorpion sting in much the same manner as Rafiki had done for Kion’s father Simba. There was always a gap between the two, as if some unwritten law of the circle of life kept the two from being as friendly as Makini was with Rani. Still, if anyone asked them about this distance between the two, both would respond that no such gap existed and that each got along just fine with the other.
