During the Italian Renaissance, the elite class of Venice showed off their wealth with ostentatiously decorated gondolas (flat-bottomed rowing boats).

The ruff collar had its heyday from 1560 CE to 1630 CE. Fashionable with all but the lowest social classes, the size and complexity of the ruff usually reflected the wearer’s wealth and social standing.
