Post: In Nineteen Fifty nine, a courageous group of twelve African - American students, now known as the Charlottesville Twelve, became the first to desegregate public schools in Charlottesville, Virginia, five years after Brown vs. The Board of Education. Facing violent opposition, these students, ranging from first to twelfth grade, integrated Venable Elementary and Lane High School under federal court order. We first need to give credit to the parents of the African American students who sued the Charlottesville School Board for their children to gain access to the white schools, and their journey was one fraught with hostility. White parents protested, and many enrolled their children into private schools. Black students endure daily racial slurs, isolation, and even threats, Yet they persisted. Teachers refuse to instruct black students, and those that did steered black students away from college prep courses into vocational training programs, or they graded black students more harshly or punish them for minor infractions. These tactics aimed to push black students out or make them fail. Yet many persevered. Their resilience forced gradual reforms. But the Charlottesville Twelve was committed to the long struggle for equal education. Lane High School's football program became legendary in Charlottesville for it's fifty three game winning streak from nineteen sixty two to nineteen sixty seven, a dominance that can only be attributed to the school's integration. Can the team's unprecedented success underscored the power of inclusion while silencing critics who doubted integrated teams could excel. Decades later, the legacy was honored with a memorial plaque at Lane High, now Charlottesville High, and in two thousand and nineteen, the city publicly apologized for their suffering. The Charlottesville Twelve story remains a testament to not only the cost of justice, but to the power of parents and children to change history.
