Me & @guacamellerz.bsky.social are pretty late on the Mike Flanagan train. We did watch #TheFallOfTheHouseOfUsher a while back. Now we are jumping to #MidnightMass.

Watched #TheFallOfTheHouseOfUsher 🎬

With a minimal cast (one of which is the always incredible Vincent Price), this Poe adaptation proves to be perhaps one of Roger Corman's finest. A constant feeling of dread lies hanging over the story while it unfolds to its grand finale. #filmsky

Read #TheFallOfTheHouseOfUsher

Had to make a brief detour, because Roger Corman mentioned this Poe short in his biography as a major inspiration for his career. I can see why.
The last quarter of this tale is bonechilling, gothic horror writing. Truly memorable. 📚💙

Part of my homework was drawing Roderick Usher from the book, so I did this, took me 2 hours and I took no breaks

On my 23rd rewatch of #TheFallOfTheHouseOfUsher I am just as impressed by the series as a whole and no less jealous of @rahulkohli13.bsky.social for getting fucked with by Carla Gugino. 😳 #goddamn #brownguyhero

#TheFallOfTheHouseOfUsher

I stared too hard at the Purdue Pharma analog and opioid crisis and corruption. Verna’s relationship with other nasty people who have fucked is over.

I KEEP FORGETTING WHAT THEY HAVE IN COMMON.

A Google AI summary about how The Fall Of The House of Usher revolves around a central theme of two baby boomers making a deal to have wild success with no consequences, but they must let their children reap the madness and sickness and early death that the previous generation has sown.

A Google AI summary about how The Fall Of The House of Usher revolves around a central theme of two baby boomers making a deal to have wild success with no consequences, but they must let their children reap the madness and sickness and early death that the previous generation has sown.

In the miniseries, the central characters, Roderick and Madeline Usher, are presented as a baby boomer generation who built their massive, corrupt pharmaceutical fortune (Fortunato Pharmaceuticals, an analog for Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family) by making a "deal with the devil" (the supernatural entity, Verna) in their youth.
The narrative is widely interpreted as an allegory for the baby boomer generation's actions and their impact on subsequent generations:
Generational Sins: The fundamental premise is that the elders (boomers) secured immense wealth and an "easy life" for themselves through morally bankrupt actions, with the consequences (a curse leading to the gruesome deaths of all their descendants) deferred until the next generation had to pay the price.
Sacrifice of the Young: The Usher children and grandchildren (Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z analogs) are ultimately sacrificed for the parents' and grandparents' past choices and continued accumulation of wealth and power.
Refusal to Hand Over Power: The older generation's refusal to step down or acknowledge their wrongdoing means that the "entire house" collapses around them, leaving no chance for the younger generations to fix the mess or establish a new normal.
Modern Issues: The show weaves in modern societal critiques relevant to this generational dynamic, such as the opioid epidemic, late-stage capitalism, and climate change (the deal with Verna is a clear allegory for environmental repercussions passed to younger generations).
The original Edgar Allan Poe short story (1839) does not contain any reference to baby boomers or modern generational themes, but rather focuses on classic Gothic themes of madness, isolation, inherited illness, and the psychological decay of an ancient aristocratic family line. The Netflix series is a reimagining that uses these original themes to explore a modern, generational critique

I can’t believe that it took me so long to put this together about #TheFallOfTheHouseOfUsher.

It’s not just about Purdue and Succession and gothic themes…

It’s about greedy Boomers who won’t hand over power, who make the bargain to have power and wealth and health while their kids get nada.

In a decade, when you’d need to have been part of the Succession zeitgeist, a lot of the homages and TV cultural moments in #TheFallOfTheHouseOfUsher will fall kinda flat and make the tone weird and confusing.

OH!!
That speech that Madeline gives to Roderick about the Healthcare system and money and the labor force and consumers...even more relevant 2 years later. Of course, HER jaded spin on it is toxic, but that's her character...
EXCELLENT rewatch!
