The mockingbird outside your bedroom window has been singing since midnight. It's 2 AM. He hasn't stopped. You are going to lose your mind. He doesn't have a mate. That's the entire explanation. Paired male mockingbirds sing during the day. Unpaired males sing at night. If the bird outside your window is going at 2 AM with no break, no response, no duet — he's single and he's advertising to any female within a quarter mile who might be listening in the dark. He sings 200 different songs — borrowed from every species in his territory. Cardinal phrases, blue jay calls, robin songs, car alarms, gate hinges, cell phone ringtones. He cycles through them in rapid succession, never repeating the same phrase twice in a row. The variety IS the signal. A female evaluates a male mockingbird primarily by repertoire size. More songs = older bird = survived more seasons = better genes. The males with the biggest libraries get chosen first. He's up to 200 songs because he's been alive for at least 3-4 years, learning and adding phrases every month. A one-year-old male sings about 50 songs. A four-year-old sings 200. She can estimate his age by counting his repertoire in the dark. She's been counting. He'll sing all night — from dusk until dawn — for up to 3 weeks. If a female responds, he'll stop the night singing within 24 hours. If no female responds, he'll keep going until either someone chooses him or the breeding window closes and he gives up until next year. The volume at 2 AM in a quiet suburban neighborhood is genuinely unreasonable. He's the loudest bird in North America by some measures. He doesn't care. He has 3 weeks and 200 songs and he's running out of nights. He's not annoying you. He's auditioning for someone who hasn't shown up yet. If he stops suddenly in the middle of the night — she arrived. Congratulate him silently and go back to sleep
