On February 2, 1897, Alfred L. Cralle patented the "Ice Cream Mold and Disher" (ice cream scooper). While working as a porter in Pittsburgh, he designed the mechanical device to allow servers to scoop ice cream with one hand, improving upon the slow, two-spoon method of serving.

Today in Black History: On Aug. 19, 1791, mathematician Benjamin Banneker wrote a letter to Thomas Jefferson, urging him to end slavery & “put your souls in their souls’ stead.”
Banneker highlighted Jefferson's hypocrisy. His courage still convicts today.

Born into slavery, his parents were owned by Edward B. Dudley, North Carolina Governor, from 1836 to 1841.
On this day in 1891, Dr. Daniel Hale Williams founded Provident Hospital in Chicago, IL. It was the first Black owned and operated hospital in the United States.
