A Red-shouldered hawk, I think, perched on our backyard fence. It has one foot tucked up in its warm belly feathers. Next to the hawk a sign is hanging. The sign says “everybirdy welcome”. Southern California.

I’m thinking Red-shouldered hawk, could be a Red-tailed. Both are uncommon visitors to the backyard fence. But as we see from the second photo -
