The dismissed #shōgun #TokugawaYoshinobu gave up #EdoCastle on #ThisDayInHistory in 1868, marking a final end to the #TokugawaShogunate and the supremacy of the #MeijiRestoration government. The imperial capital was moved from #Kyoto to Edo in September, renaming the city #Tokyo.

Japan under the #TokugawaShogunate was never "closed" — Dutch merchants were in regular contact. The US decided it wanted in on the profits, so an expedition under #CommodorePerry opened fire on Edo. The #ConventionOfKanagawa was signed under duress on #ThisDayInHistory in 1854.

On #ThisDayInHistory, the #GreatMartyrdomOfEdo of 1623 occurred in modern #Tokyo, #Japan. The #TokugawaShogunate, fearful of European weapons sales and interference, lashed out at Japanese #Christians. 50 were burnt at the stake, including a #Franciscan and a #Jesuit missionary.

The Uraga Dock Company was founded by Enomoto Takeaki 榎本 武揚 in 1869. A shipyard had existed here at the mouth of the Uraga Channel near #Yokosuka since the early 19th century. The first Japanese-built Western-style warship, Hōō Maru #鳳凰丸, was built at #Uraga in 1848 for the #TokugawaShogunate 1/3

#Satsuma Province in what is now #Kagoshima Prefecture was a crucial player in the #MeijiRestoration; the #Daimyo of Satsuma rose in rebellion against the #TokugawaShogunate in the #BoshinWar. As a result, many early Meiji government officials and #IJN naval officers came from here. #Japan #history
