The dismissed #shōgun #TokugawaYoshinobu gave up #EdoCastle on #ThisDayInHistory in 1868, marking a final end to the #TokugawaShogunate and the supremacy of the #MeijiRestoration government. The imperial capital was moved from #Kyoto to Edo in September, renaming the city #Tokyo.

On #ThisDayInHistory in 1867, the last #Tokugawa #shōgun resigned. The #Bakufu system of military governance had dominated #Japan since 1185, with the imperial house largely powerless. The #Shogunate's end opened the way to the #MeijiRestoration and Japan's #DefensiveDevelopment.

Enomoto Takeaki 榎本 武揚 was one of the founding fathers of the #ImperialJapaneseNavy and one of the most colorful characters of the #MeijiRestoration. He was a member of the #Tokugawa Clan and so was on the losing side of the #BoshinWar. He was declared president of the Republic of Ezo in 1869. 1/3

#Satsuma Province in what is now #Kagoshima Prefecture was a crucial player in the #MeijiRestoration; the #Daimyo of Satsuma rose in rebellion against the #TokugawaShogunate in the #BoshinWar. A 1872 letter by Saigō Takamori (西郷隆盛) has resurfaced after a century. It was written to
Ōkubo Toshimichi (大久保利通) who was overseas in the United States and being detailed on the recent situation in Japan to stay in the loop at the time.
