Side-by-side image of two reclining stone sculptures: on the left, a pre-Columbian Mesoamerican Chacmool figure carved in light-colored stone, depicted lying on its back with knees bent, torso upright, head turned sideways, wearing a headdress and bands on its arms and legs; on the right, a modern reinterpretation in darker stone, with a more abstract and rounded form, showing a reclining figure with one arm resting on the head and the other across the body, placed on a rough-textured rectangular base.
Toltec-Maya Chacmool (c.900-1224) + Henry Moore (1929)
Moore first saw a picture of the Chacmool figure in Zwemmer’s Bookshop in London in 1922. Three years later he saw a reproduction in Paris. Moore's artwork echoes it in numerous ways.
