om Wesselmann never liked the term “Pop Art” to be applied to his work, probably because he felt that his imagery did not present a cultural commentary on the popular items he included. In “Still life #35”, Wesselmann creates a monumental still life – an iconic and time-tested genre in European art history – and fills it with very American elements from the mid-20th century: a loaf of white bread, a pack of cigarettes, a six-pack of sodas, a can of stew. These inexpensive, mundane items are plastered with branding logos. Everything is saturated, including the lighting. The still life items are on an indoor table, while an outdoor scene of a commercial airplane flying over an emerald green sea can be seen through a window. By the mid-1960s, American Pop Art was becoming bigger (this Wesselmann piece covers four canvases), bolder and less subtle. Wesselmann’s art also became more erotic, in an almost voyeuristic manner, as he moved from commercial items (as seen in this piece) to a large body of work focused on the female nude (also a classic European art historical theme). “Still Life #35” is composed of both oil paint and collage.
