When I began to wonder why someone like me would even be at university, he bundled me off to the library to write about Blake's Songs of Innocence and Experience - "from your own experience!" I cried when I read the "more power to your elbow, lass" he'd scribbled across the bottom of my essay. It was the first I'd ever written where it felt it might be fine to just be me.

Spent some time reading these today. "Laureate's Block" is one of the books that's always by my bed. It started with a showing of V on tv & then I explored the rest. In person I think #TonyHarrison could appear the typical dour Yorkshire man but his poems are filled with humour & irony. #booksky

This is very somber news. #tonyharrison was a poet & playwright of extraordinary learning, versatility & invention. Personal, political, classical, vernacular, epic & intimate. 1 of our most accomplished writers since the war. RIP (a sentiment he would disavow)
