RELIEF OF A CITYSCAPE, C2 СЕ. CELANO, CASTELLO PICCOLOMINI Alessandro Torlonia, in 1862-1878, succeded in doing what ancients Romans from Julius Caesar to the emperor Claudius could not. Through the work of an international group of engineers, he managed to drain the Fucine Lake, in western Abruzzo. It started as a basin of water of about 140 sq.km, Claudius reduced it to about 90 sq.km, and Hadrian's work deepening the drainage tunnels brought it down to about 57 sq.km. However, after the fall of the empire, earthquakes and landslides blocked the tunnels and the lake gradually returned to its original size. When Prince Torlonia drained the lake for good, his excavators discovered a number of ancient sculptures, including a long relief in five sections of limestone, of which this piece, showing a cityscape and its environs, is perhaps the most important. The cityscape at left shows a fortified town with a huge gate and a street leading back from it, with a densely built-up city vividly evoked, with city blocks of buildings carved in amazing detail. At right, the countryside is full of forests, with a farm/villa at bottom and a few buildings, probably temples, on the heights.
#ReliefWednesday leads us to the #CastelloPiccolomini in #Celano in western #Abruzzo, where the enormous #Torlonia fiefdom of #Fucino occupies the drained bed of the Fucine Lake. One of the finds from the draining is this amazing C2 #relief of a city and its surrounding land. #AncientBluesky 🏺

'Strigilated' lenos (bathtub) sarcophagus, with the strigilated wavy lines on the front, representing the waters of the rivers of the underworld, with a slim amphora in the middle with initials. Large fully maned lion heads stand out in high relief on either side, each lion with prey in its paws: on the left, an antelope, and on the right (modern restoration), a ram. We can just barely see the animal tamers directing the lions on either side.
Shot taken from the left side of the lenos, showing the bearded, older animal tamer, using a sharp prod on the lion to get it to capture and kill the antelope. On the unseen right side, the animal tamer is a young man.
For #sarcophagussaturday, a gorgeous lenos (bathtub) sarcophagus, from the #Torlonia Collection, with the familiar heads of lions on each side. But in the side view, you can see the lion is being guided by a 'mansuetarius', an animal tamer, to entertain the crowds. 🏺

SPOLIA IN THE CASINA DELLE CIVETTE, VILLA TORLONIA The eccentric prince Giovanni II Torlonia transformed a small C19 house on the grounds of his family's villa from a fanciful "Swiss Cottage" into an even more unusual house for himself. He was a solitary figure who had no use for the splendour of the main building, the Casino Nobiliare. He slept during the day and was awake all night, and decorated his house with animals of the night, like bats, snails, and owls: when he had stained glass featuring the latter by the brilliant young artist Duilio Cambellotti installed in the front room in 1916, the building got its name, the "Little House of the Owls". The Villa Torlonia was already full of follies and fake ruins, so this curious house with its secondary building attached with an enclosed bridge was not out of place. Here we see the brick arch, built in different ancient Roman techniques, decorated with bits and pieces of the famous Torlonia collection of antiquities: a relief with a female divinity (probably Selene) from a sarcophagus, a bit of cornice, the base of an altar, a damaged Composite capital.
#SpoliaSunday takes us along the via #Nomentana to the marvelous #VillaTorlonia, since 1978 public property but once the private residence of #Mussolini. The owner, Giovanni II #Torlonia, also lived on the grounds, in this delightful house full of #stainedglass and #spolia. #ClassicsBluesky 🏺
