The idea of a #TouristTax is great if the money is used to maintain and regenerate tourist areas.

However charging £2 per person, per night could make holidays unaffordable & discourage people to visiting areas in our own country.

We pay enough tax yet get less & less for it.

I thought I'd seen something announced recently about Mayors being given the powers to implement a #TouristTax which is good but fairly feeble from a devolution POV

The #TouristTax is necessary. But as you say it’s not going to be a substitute for proper interventions like a WPL or congestion charge.

Tourism brings benefits, but it also brings costs that councils in financial freefall are currently forced to cover.

A tourist tax is a reasonable way to rebalance this. And we should pair it with VAT cuts that help local pubs and community events thrive.
