The #TreatyOfWaitangi was signed in 1840 on #ThisDayInHistory by the British state & #Māori chiefs, creating #NewZealand. It promised to leave indigenous lands untouched & inviolable, but was broken six years later because preventing land-theft was "a bar to sound colonisation."

NZ's Upper House (the Legislative Council) was abolished in 1951. It was a house of review just like Australia's Senate. It's abolition meant it was easier to get controversial legislation passed. However, it is sadly missing in the case of Seymour's deplorable #TreatyOfWaitangi Bill. #auspol #NZPol

By attempting to change how the #TreatyOfWaitangi is interpreted, the racist #DavidSeymour is effectively tearing up NZ's founding document. It should rightly be interpreted by Maori as an act of war. As such the haka was entirely appropriate.
