#Jazzsky The early #Tristano project distanced itself from #bebop in several ways. 1). Composition: linear ABCD construction as opposed to (blues based) AABA. 2). Improv: extended across 32 bars without finding easy harmonic resting places en route (eg. cross accenting), requiring a stricter beat.

From the 1990s the daunting #Tristano repertoire came to be assimilated into a handful of small groups. Partly due to the longevity and influence of Lee Konitz. Before that even jazz history books only mentioned Tristano dismissively in passing. (+English bassist, spiritualist Peter Ind.) #jazzsky

I’m resistant to displays of virtuosity in #jazzsky. Difficult to quantify. #Jarrett never shows off. (Some might say the greatest improviser of the record era.) I think #Dizzy showed off but then so did Bird! Im fonder of Bird than of Dizzy. Bill Evans:understated. #Tristano: locked into his thing.
