Lee Konitz and Miles.
#jazzsky. Frankly Miles was ungracious about what have become classics of the genre.

"Eight pieces of …" ( #jazzsky series 40)
TWO (Set C)
#5: TONK ("Pianistically Allied")
"Duke" Ellington, Billy Strayhorn: p
NYC, 10 Jan 1946
Headlong romp of 2 friends & rivals - archaic even in 1946. Oddly like some cheered-up (Stride) version of European expressionism: "Metropolis" + Lowry?
Jazz OTD: I don't have individual track dates, but organist Joey Francesco recorded his April 6-9, 2006 stint at Yoshi's in Oakland with guitarist Jake Langley and drummer Byron Landham, accompanied by the tenor sax titan, George Coleman. #Jazzsky
Jazz OTD: Richard Wyands, the pianist of choice for many of the top bop-oriented players of all (Gigi Gryce, Kenny Burrell, Gene Ammons, etc), recorded the last of his too-infrequent albums as leader, "As Long As There's Music," on April 6, 2000 with Ray Drummond (b) and Grady Tate (d). #jazzsky

TWO (Set C)
#4: Evidence (Monk)
Steve Lacy: ss
Elvin Jones: d
NYC, early 1984
From a Monk tribute album (Various Artists). Wow Elvin!
(~ but we're going to need a chordal instrument back in these selections soon... they're in the majority in duos.)
Happy Monday everyone 👋👋 Now playing a #jazzsky diamond !!

Jazz OTD: I don't have exact track dates, but over a 10-week stretch that began on April 6, 1994, tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano recorded the striking but challenging album "Rush Hour," working with arranger/conductor Gunther Schuller. Two maximalists, so it's a dense, memorable work. #jazzsky
Jazz OTD: Three of the best ever to play jazz - Geri Allen (p), Charlie Haden (b), and Paul Motian (d) - also comprised one of the best and most intuitive trios of all, a deeply intuitive and collaborative group. They recorded their typically excellent album "Segments" on April 6-8, 1989. #jazzsky
Jazz OTD: Cedar Walton's flawless hard bop trio with bassist David Williams and drummer Billy Higgins recorded their characteristically lively set at Yoshi's in Oakland on April 6, 1989, releasing it as "Ironclad." #Jazzsky
Jazz OTD: I had to Wikipedia J.R. Monterose to get a sense of his work; a terrific stylist, the saxophonist recorded only sporadically, particularly in his later years, but this album of duets with the legendary pianist Tommy Flanagan is a reminder of his talents. Recorded April 6-7, 1981. #jazzsky
Jazz OTD: I believe that "The Great Jazz Trio" (Hank Jones, Ron Carter, Tony Williams) had been assembled originally for a Sadao Watanabe album on Japan's "East Wind Records" in 1976, recording another eight for the label, including this lovely one with Jackie McLean on April 6-7, 1978. #Jazzsky
Jazz OTD: If I've got it right, Nina Simone recorded this wonderful track for "Pastel Blues" on April 6, 1964. Simple and utterly masterful. #jazzsky
Jazz OTD: Roy Haynes's creative, thoughtful album "Cracklin'" is as much of a showcase for his "with" guest, saxophonist Booker Ervin, as it is for the great drummer. Recorded April 6, 1963 with Ronnie Mathews (p) and Larry Ridley (d). #jazzsky
Jazz OTD: Booker Ervin's debut album "The Book Cooks" has him paired, a bit oddly, with another tenor saxophonist, the dissimilar Zoot Sims; it showcases his distinctiveness. Recorded April 6, 1960 with Tommy Turrentine (tp), Tommy Flanagan (p), George Tucker (b), and Danny Richmond (p). #jazzsky
Jazz OTD: Hank Mobley (ts), Donald Byrd (tp), Horace Silver (p), Doug Watson (b), and Art Blakey (d) made history on April 6, 1956: the first session for the debut album "The Jazz Messengers." This opener captured the hard bop mastery long associated with the group's various iterations. #Jazzsky
