This reporting came out of a talk at #TrustCon by @riana.bsky.social. We know so much about how predators try to trick AI systems (I'm thinking of the great @404media.co reporting on CivitAI) but there are real blockers to red teaming.
Thanks to Thorn & @eredmil1.bsky.social for their expertise!
What an incredible few days at #TrustCon! Thank you to everyone at the Trust & Safety Professional Association for bringing this incredible community together.
And thanks to everyone who attended one of our panels, said “Hi” in the elevator, stopped us for a hallway chat, or visited our booth!

#TrustCon reflections:
1) Omg people are doing some great work and a lot to keep us safe in the face of incredible headwinds
#ICYMI: ROOST is at TrustCon 2025!
We kicked off the conference with a keynote address from our CTO, Vinay Rao, who shared that a safer digital landscape can be achieved through increased awareness, community engagement and technological advancements.

I'm attending the #TrustCon panel about working with journalist and it was just asked "how much historical context is too much?"
I personally always love to hear background because then it helps me communicate more clearly.
I think I’d summarize my first #trustcon as the loveliest of people discussing the darkest of topics. It’s truly something else ♥️
For the third time this #TrustCon I'm hearing the phrase "trust and safety is adversarial". There is no end state where it's "done". It is for this reason I strongly believe every platform needs to allow an admin to block harmful content, starting with text strings and URLs known to be used in […]
It’s wild to be talking about my career with new folks and find myself saying things like “my first startup job was 15 years ago” (and, actually, I guess it was 17). Shoutout to my fellow veterans at #TrustCon
Anyway, I guess I'm the "unprofessional" one! but I’m leaving #TrustCon with barely any connections made, regret and disappointment. But if you’re interested in my work on multilingual AI evaluation and human rights impact assessment, I’d be happy to connect: rpakzad@taraazresearch.org
I'm at #TrustCon. Half the sessions are on tech companies' responsibilities on child safety (not Palestinian children though) and the well-being of trust and safety professionals, yet the conference design completely ignores the realities of working parents, especially for mothers. My experience 👇
Guilt and shame Forgive limitations * Bodily reaction * Sense of "responsibility" for the event Dissipate shame * "... a trauma victim may adopt feelings of shame that rightfully belongs with someone else, one whose shamelessness allowed them to perpetrate trauma, or another who did not prevent a trauma when they possibly could have." (Rotschild & Bear, 2023, p. 169) * Whose shame? * Write, draw, dance, etc. * Share - use Mindful Gauge
A reminder from #TrustCon that moderators subjected to vicarious trauma often feel guilt or shame from "getting it wrong" - but that guilt is misplaced.
Four of my safety heros on the #TrustCon stage at the same time!
@dwillner.bsky.social @aagh.bsky.social Rebecca Portnoff and Mike Pappas!
This morning at #trustcon someone asked me "which side of trust and safety are you on?" And I responded "do you mean for or against?"
Turns out that was not what he meant.
Panel discussion at TrustCon 2025
Day 2 at #TrustCon underway, with Kenya Fairley from Bumble reflecting on parallels between T&S and the movement against gender based violence.
At #trustcon and it's interesting to see how short the development cycle in Trust and Safety is getting. The time between identifying a new threat, to new policy, to effective detection and intervention is getting so much shorter and efficient. Still not seeing a lot of proficiency numbers though.
#TrustCon day one reflections:
1) #AI safety is a thing the whole industry are grappling with and an area where fast moving product deliver is causing real challenges for safety teams.
A bunch of D.C. people are in San Francisco this week for #trustcon, and their reaction to San Francisco summer weather — high of 62 but it feels like 52 — is adorable.
Ireland, UK, Singapore online safety officials all in agreement that self-attestation of age is not appropriate, not effective, not compliant. #TrustCon
Heartening to hear Singapore's Edward Wee describe IMDA's approach to age verification is to require the app stores to do the age gating. #TrustCon
In a #TrustCon panel with Ireland's Coimisiún na Meán safety commissioner Niamh Hodnett - seems like the expectation for online platforms needing to provide age verification will be able to tap into the forthcoming DSA EU digital wallet tech as a "white label" means to comply with age assurance […]
Vinay Rao, ROOST CTO, stands on a stage at TrustCon, giving a presentation.
Hope you caught ROOST CTO Vinay Rao's talk at #TrustCon this morning, talking about our newly announced tools and why he joined the team. Our whole team is thrilled to be at the conference this week and looking to connect!
At #TrustCon in SF this week. 1400 attendees this year 😮 Props to @charlottewillner.bsky.social for an honest, inspiring opening talk about the challenges of the work we do in T&S.
Start preventative Monitor broadly Adapt fast Collaborate extensively
#TrustCon keynote from Vinay @ #ROOST ended with this slide - context was countering the dangers of AI but four things every admin and moderator can take to heart.
Start preventative
Monitor broadly
Adapt fast
Collaborate extensively
That last one is especially close to my heart.
