On #ThisDayInHistory in 1922, the #OttomanEmpire collapsed when its last sultan, #MehmedVI, fled. He did not abdicate, but the #OttomanSultanate ceased to exist with formation of the #TurkishRepublic. The empire had been founded in 1299 and ruled vast lands on three continents.
