Two of my pink fingers against the dark grey trunk of a small poplar, no more than a couple of inches/ handful of cm diameter. Some side branches and bits of dried twig extend from the trunk, and its surface holds many patches of extra tiny lichen. At this scale it is hard to distinguish the individual bodies within the patches, but in following close-ups you will see dozens of distinct bits within an area no bigger than a (short) fingernail.

A tiny patch of silver-grey lichen, flat foliose bits giving rise to tiny protruding caps- like the wide head of a cobra rising from its coils, with tiny thread-like filaments (fangs!) hanging from the inside of the inverted tiny cap/bowl shapes.Other bits have a more typical branched frond-like look. A tiny bit of gold lichen has taken hold in the centre.

Closer still view of the odd toothed inverted caps, and we can see that even some of the frond-shapes have short wiry filaments extending from the tips.

A bit of mustardy orange lichen, mostly flat, branching. The surface looks smooth, even wet or rubbery. It has bits of the silvery lichen with wiry filamented tips next to/among it, and a few orange buttons that will presumably grow into more of the orange foliose bits. There is some of the grey, rough bark visible.

Overcast day, subtle light. Fuzzy silver white catkins beginning to emerge paintbrush-like from their sticky red brown bud casings. Several catkins cluster at the tip of a twig that rises from lower left, pointed to the right. In the background, light coloured aspen trunks form a muted blurred vertical abstract pattern with the shadowed areas between.

Looking out from the edge of a mixed wood between furrowed grey shadowed trunks of Balsam Poplar and green sunlit branches of White Spruce. Beyond is a bit of snowy ground, washed out by the sun, matching the colourless sky seen through another mixed wood area farther back. Middle ground is a wetland area of dense bushy willows a few to handful of metres high, grey/red/brown with the sun picking out highlights.

Close view of the middle of the previous photo- we see part of the trunk of one of the Balsam Poplars to right, and from behind it just a bit of a spruce branch then a tangle of one gnarled poplar branch reaching toward the centre with a couple of bare thin branches coming in from the left. Some twigs are dark shadowed, some bright in sunlight. Behind is a blurred backdrop of dense willow growth- innumerable fine twigs and stems grey with hints of red-brown, looking lighter in the sun.
