A photograph of the trunk of a tree (possibly a beach) that is very heavily caked in yellow lichen, there is something mesmerising about the texture of the lichen with many little craters to be seen, maybe almost akin to what the moon's surface would look like if it actually were made of cheese. The trunk itself is only visible in small patches. The background of the image is heavily out of focus to the point of nonexistence.

The cratered texture of the lichen on this tree has me mesmerised.

The rock in the landslide was mostly a charcoal-grey basalt, which you see here covered in a thriving crust of black, green, grey, rust and yellow lichens.

An arched, lichen-covered twig in a tree. Most of the lichen is a bright yellow sunburst lichen, with its little alien-like disc shapes all up and down the twig. There is also a tuft of pale sea-green oakmoss or cartilage lichen at the top of the arch.

Pale green powder-horn type lichen encrusts a weathered wood fence beam. Some have a spot of bright red on the ends.

A thin twig of hawthorn, densely encrusted with a bright yellow-green lichen that is fruiting vigorously and is covered in little cup-shaped apothecia. A few small brightly red-pink coloured buds of the tree are poking through the layer of lichen.

A single erythronium aka the fawn lily, trout lily, dog's-tooth violet or adder's tongue shooting out of a steep slope covered in fallen leaves with tall spruces and pines in the background.

This spring crocus was so full of pollen you can see it trapped in the petals made semi-translucent on a bright background.

Small bright green Polypodium glycyrrhiza fern leaves grow upside down in a bright olive green moss bed on a big leaf maple (Acer macrophyllum) branch. You can see a profusion of mossy and lichenous tree branches in the background. This was photographed from a foot bridge over a ravine, looking straight into the crowns of the trees growing in the ravine floor.

An array of green mosses and lichen in various shades of blue to blue-green cover an apple tree branch crotch. There are flat growing shield lichen, a few branching lichens, both sturdy looking and lacy, and prickly looking moss branches. It is a medley of textures. Apple trees seem to have the best lichens and mosses.

Trouvailles: Licorice fern (Polypodium glycyrrhiza) on a big leaf maple(Acer macrophyllum) ; a lichen and moss bonanza.

A branch fell out of a tree during the last storm. Here it is, - damp, dark purplish-brown wood lying in the dark brown bark on the park path. The stick is covered in pale sea-green oakmoss lichen, some cartilage lichen and tufts of bright, happy, Kelly-green moss.

An undulating bed of moss and old sporophytes is seen on the top rail of a fence in our front yard. A couple of lichens can be seen in the moss, as dawn begins in the distance. Due to the low light and vapor in the air, indistinct utility poles, rooflines and foliage add to the colors and shapes in the picture. The colors are mostly green, on a strong diagonal in the lower half of the picture, and yellow, orange, gray and blue fill in the sky above the green.

A red bloom from a deciduous tree. It will eventually turn into a leaf.

Tons of little moss tufts cling to a tree trunk prettily.

A few little pixie cup lichens grow on a stump between tufts of vibrant green moss.

Saw a coyote on today's walk, but wasn't able to get a photo. Super cool experience though.

A photograph of some vertically-oriented stone slabs on the top of a stone wall. The kind and colour of the stone are hard to tell, as all the exposed surfaces are coated in a layer of pale grey lichen, which is in turn covered with warty-looking apothecia, the fruiting bodies which are round and raised up with a pale grey rim and a faintly pinkish and slightly sunken inner. Some other plants and mosses and lichens fill the deep gaps between the slabs, but they’re mostly out of focus.

Another one that seems like it should be easier to identify… maybe ochrolechia parella? It had thoroughly colonised all of the exposed surfaces of this old stone wall. There are some other species tucked in the gaps… I see some cladonia cups, but that’s as much as I can name.

A photograph of a natural fibre rope barrier, wet with rain and encrusted with at least two species of lichen. One kind is a pale bluish green and has tatty papery looking “leaves”... the other is more pale green and has a finely branching hairy or fluffy appearance.

Things you can see in places with clean air and plenty of rain. Not enough of either where I spend most of my time.

The papery looking lichen might be Platismatia glauca, and I’m guessing the fluffy one is an Usnea but I don’t know what kind.

An edge on view of some lobes of dogtooth lichen, showing the long and stiff white rhizines underneath which aren’t roots but serve more to hold the thallus in place.

A view of some more mature lobes of the Iichen that have gone paler and dryer and curled up more and formed round orangey apothecia at the edges which are the fruiting parts of the lichen and will shed spores.

A clump of dogtooth lichen overgrowing some moss. The leaf-like lobes are a few centimetres across and dark grey and wrinkled on top, and white and hairy underneath. There are about 10 lobes visible in a broad patch, making it look quite plant-like.

Here’s an interesting thing… greater dogtooth lichen, or Peltigera membranacea. It is remarkably big and fast growing for a lichen… you can see it overshadowing the moss underneath it here. I had mistaken it for a liverwort, but you can see lichen-like fruiting bodies in photo 2.
