Progress of a greyscale underpainting depicting two paths in a landscape. One leads to darkness and a swamp, the other meanders up hills leading to a mountain peak.

Painting progress. I realized without an overhead sun there wouldn't be dappled sunlight (this is just before sunrise) so I changed the light spots to holes for the "screaming faces." Too obvious?

A small painting in tones of grey depicting a large copse of trees in the center of a path diverging in two directions to the left and right from the point of view of the traveler on the path who must choose which way to go. The path to the right is more difficult at first, partly obstructed by a fallen tree and rocks, but then the path meanders through hills and valleys leading towards a mountain peak. The path to the left at first seems easier, but it quickly disappears into the dark woods. A swamp seen through a break in the trees fades into fog in the background. Dark clouds overshadow this path.

Did this small value study today as a test for a larger painting. First time trying the grisaille method, underpainting acyrlic grey tones to then glaze over with oil color. 🙂🎨
