서울 초미세먼지, 반사형 성분 많아 지구 냉각 효과 #UNIST #초미세먼지 #서울미세먼지 #멕시코시티 #지구온난화 #미세먼지광학특성 #환경과학기술 서울과 멕시코시티의 초미세먼지가 서로 다른 광학적 성격을 지닌다는 연구 결과가 나왔다. 출처=UNIST 울산과학기술원(UNIST) 박상서 교수팀은 14개 주요 도시의 미세먼지 시료와 광학 데이터를 분석해, 서울은 태양빛을 반사하는 성분이 많고, 멕시코시티는 흡수 성분이 많다고 밝혔다. 서울의 미세먼지는 황산염·질산염 비중이 높아 햇빛을 산란시키는 ‘반사형’ 특성이 나타났다. 반면 멕시코시티는 그을음(블랙카본)이 많아 빛을 흡수하는 ‘흡수형’ 미세먼지가 주를 이뤘다. 이는 서울의 미세먼지가 지구를 식히는 효과가 있고, 멕시코시티는 온난화를 유발할 가능성이 높다는 의미다. 연구팀은 각 도시의 미세먼지 성분 자료와 AERONET 광학 데이터를 분석해 단일산란알베도(SSA) 수치를 계산했다. SSA는 1에 가까울수록 빛을 반사하고, 0에 가까우면 흡수하는 성격을 띤다. 또한 미세토양이 많은 경우에는 빛의 파장별 산란 특성이 급격히 변하는 모습도 확인됐다. 이처럼 미세먼지의 성분과 광학 특성을 정밀하게 분석함으로써, 대기질 예보와 보건 정책 수립에 실질적인 기초 자료로 활용할 수 있다는 설명이다. 박상서 교수는 “광학 데이터를 활용해 미세먼지 성분과 독성을 간접 추정하는 기반을 마련한 것”이라며 이번 연구의 의의를 전했다. 이번 연구는 UNIST 동남권 미세먼지연구관리센터와의 공동연구로 진행됐으며, 환경 분야 권위지인 ‘Environmental Science & Technology’에 9월 12일자 논문으로 게재됐다.
